Miscellaneous Cemetery Burials

Coles County, IL

Feel free to submit your family's burials by emailing Kim . Good information to include is name, date of birth/death, parents' names, spouse names if known. (No Family Trees or Gedcoms please!!) Do make sure that they are in fact buried in that particular cemetery before you email me :-)

I have no way of checking the information sent in and I provide this space only as a service to other researchers. So.....everyone needs to confirm for themselves the information they find on this page (and for that matter, any other website with genealogical data)

Leitch Cemetery, located in Pleasant Grove twp., across the road from the old Robert Leitch farmstead. The name Leitch is pronounced LITCH, to rhyme with 'hitch.' In Pendleton Co, VA the name was spelled Leach and descendants there still spell it that way. Robert was a son of John & Margaret (Pierson, Pearson) Leach, natives of Co. Londonderry, Ireland. John served in the Rev. War. Two sisters of Robert's also came to Coles Co. and are buried in the long-abandoned Armstrong cemetery. Elizabeth Jane, who wed Joseph Armstrong, and William Leitch of Lafayette twp were children of Mary Leach, sister to Robert.
The Leitch family was highly educated and sons of Robert became teachers, stockmen, doctors and a mayor of Charleston. This family was arguably the most highly educated family in the vicinity. There was a grade school named Leitch School nearby. Most of the men attended Lee's Academy at Loxa, the only "higher education" institution in Coles County. Upon abandonment of this small family family cemetery, the family buried in nearby Mount Tabor Cemetery
A few are buried in the Indian Presbyterian Cemetery, one mile S of Lerna, and in Mound Cemetery, Charleston. The Leitch cemetery is in rather good shape even though the walls around it may have collapsed in the intervening years.
It is hard to see from the road and its remoteness has been a positive factor in its preservation. It has been recorded several times including twice by me, Erik P Conard, a Leitch descendant..
