EASTLAND DISASTER SURVIVOR
ZAJIC, Irene K., 95, a Chicago homemaker, was a survivor of the 1915 Eastland disaster in the Chicago River that
took 812 lives. One of the victims was her younger sister. A resident of the Dunning neighborhood, she died Tuesday
in Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. Mrs. Zajic was working at Western Electric in Cicero and on July 24, 1915,
took her sister, Ada, on the company excursion planned for Michigan City, Ind. They boarded the steamer Eastland
at the foot of Clark Street and were waiting on deck. The crew had let out ballast to accommodate the large number
of passengers. But when too many people crowded to one side to watch a passing ship, the Eastland capsized. She
was thrown into the water and lost track of her sister. Someone reached into the water and pulled Mrs. Zajic out.
``My mother never knew who it was who saved her,`` said her daughter, Joanne Shields.
Survivors, besides her daughter, include: a son, Arnold; another daughter, Evelyn Senn; nine grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; two great- great-grandchildren; two brothers; and a sister. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m.
until 10 a.m. Thursday in the Kolssak of Wheeling Funeral Home, 189 S. Milwaukee Rd., Wheeling. Mass for Mrs. Zajic
will follow at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 171 W. Dundee Rd., Wheeling. Chicago Tribune,

ZOUB, Morris B
Services for Morris B. Zoub, 78, of 860 Lake Shore dr., will be held at 2 p.m. today in the chapel at 5206 Broadway.
Mr. Zoub, who died Tuesday in Columbus hospital, operated a chain of drug stores before retiring 10 years ago.
He was a past director of the Chicago Retail Druggists association. Surviving are his widow, Taubie; a son, Burton
I.; three grandchildren; and a brother.
