1818 Census of Crawford County, Illinois

Transcribed by Kim Torp

The original census was listed in this particular book in alphabetical order by the FIRST name. I have sorted it based on alphabetical order of the LAST name, but you can tell what order the individual was originally listed in this book by the number in the first column.. In the book, the first column is titled "Date of receiving list" and a number assigned to that person (which were all in order starting with 1 and ending with 518). Some of the entries had dates noted, (which I assume to be the date the census return was received), but most did not. I have left them out since it is difficult to tell which date belongs to which individual. Its value is limited anyway, since all of the dates ranged from April 6, 1818 to May 11, 1818 in the "original" census and from July 10, 1818 to July 22, 1818 in the "additional" census. The author of this book made notations on which of these individuals could also be found in the (1) Federal Census for 1820, (2) the 1820 State Census for Clark County and (3) the 1820 State Census for Crawford County. It was just way too confusing to try and decipher the author's little symbols since most folks had more than one symbol noted, so I have left that out also. Hopefully, we will one day have the transcriptions of those various censuses online and you can check them for yourself. Names are typed exactly as they are in the book.... many of which appear to be phonetic spellings, so make sure to check all the possible variations. - Kim
In 1818, "Crawford county" consisted of a good portion of Illinois, stretching all the way from the northern counties, including Cook county, all the way down to current Clay, Marion, Richland and Lawrence counties.
