DeWitt County was created in 1839 from parts of Macon and McLean Counties. Election for selection of a County Seat was held 6 March 1839.
The poll books were lost, but a memorandum in the books of the County Commissioners state that 493 citizens voted. The 1840 census was also lost.
In 1844, the Hon. John J. McGraw, Clerk of the County Commissioners Court,ordered another census to be taken and this census has been used ever since as a substitute for the lost 1840 census. At that time, the county was divided into six precincts. Names listed here are by precinct.
