KILLED IN WAR

 

Donald J. Hall, 22, of Cairo, formerly of Mount Carmel son of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Hall, killed in the European war theater July 9, according to word to his parents.  He was a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Riggs, Miss Ruth Turner, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Leipold and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Walder of Mount Carmel.

Brothers Inducted Into Army Same Day Made Captain Same Week

 

Inducted from Albion on the same day-July 13, 1941—Walser and Raymond Harms, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Elvis Harms of Bone Gap, were separated right at the start.  Last week their parents received word that both had been promoted to the rank of captain.  Capt. Raymond K. Harms (right) is with Air Reconnaissance Squadron in England and gets his mail at APO 141, Care of Postmaster, New York.  Capt. Walser E. Harms’ address is 36th Photo Mapping Squadron and is stationed at Muskogee, Oklahoma.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Donald Paul Harper (photo)

 

Cpl. Donald Paul Harper, son of Mrs. Ethel O. Harper of Albion, was graduated recently from the Army Air Forces Flexible Gunnery School, Laredo Army Air Field, Laredo, Texas, a member of the AAF Training Command.  He is now qualified to take his place as a member of a bomber combat crew.  Along with his diploma, he received a pair of Aerial Gunner’s silver wings and a promotion grade at brief graduation exercises.  He was prepared for his place in America’s stepped up air offensive by a comprehensive six weeks course in every phase of aerial gunnery warfare.  Besides learning to fire every type weapon from camera guns to the deadly caliber .50 Browning’s, he studied turret manipulation, aircraft identification, stripping and reassembling of machine guns while blindfolded.  He climaxed the course by air firing on towed targets.  Cpl. Harper’s address is now F.A.F.R.D., Squadron G, Hammer Field, Fresno, California.

Billy Hayman (photo)

 

Staff Sergeant W. R. Hayman Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Hayman of Albion enlisted last April 27.  At that time he has only six weeks to go before completing his four year course at the Illinois College of Chiropody at Chicago, which was a tough break—to be near a diploma without completing the course.  Billy is now instructor of X-ray at the station hospital, Seymour Johnson Field, Goldsboro, N.C.

Glenn J. Hedge (photo)

 

Pvt. Glenn J. Hedge, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hedge of Albion is stationed at Atlantic City, N.J., where he is a member of the 850th Ord. Avn. (ser).  Pvt. Robert Hering

 

S-Sgt. Hering, son of Mr. and Mrs. August Hering, did a tour of duty in the Canal Zone after the above picture was taken. He is now back at the redistribution center at Miami Beach, Fla.  He enlisted Nov. 3, 1941.

Pvt. Dale E. Hortin, son of Mr. and Mrs. V.W. Hortin is stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash., where he is with the Headquarters Battery, 210th F.A. Btn.  Dale was coach at Sailor Springs high school when he was inducted last fall and is the second son of Mr. and Mrs. V.W. Hortin to be called to service, the other son Charles being with a bomb sight maintenance outfit in South Carolina.

Glen Hortin (photo)

 

Cpl. Glen Hortin, 36749103, is stationed at Camp Walters, Texas, with Co. B, 57th Infantry Training Battalion, 4th Platoon.  He is the son of Albert Hortin of Albion.  Cpl. Hortin was inducted May 13, 1943, from Mt. Vernon, where he was employed at the time.

Paul R. Hortin (photo)

 

Chaplain (1st Lieut.) Paul R. Hortin, son of County Commissioner Philip Hortin, and former noted pastor of the First Avenue Methodist church, St. Petersburg, Fla., is located with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Colorado Springs, Colo.  In addition to attending to his own flock of fledgling fliers, Chaplain Hortin has also been preaching occasionally at Petersen Field, which is short chaplains and at night on Sunday, since there are no services at this post, Chaplain Hortin has been addressing youth groups and has also preached at the First Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist,……(end of article)

Ross Hortin (photo)

 

Ross is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Hortin and was inducted May 4 of last year.  Following his boot training at Great Lakes he was sent to the University of Wisconsin to a radio school and from there to Norton Heights, Conn.  He is now stationed on the West coast where his address is Ross Hortin S 1-c, U.S.N. Jos. Inskeep

 

Pfc. Jos. Inskeep, who is stationed in Alamogordo, N.M., arrived home Saturday night on supposedly thirty day furlough to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Inskeep.  When he arrived home he found a telegram advising that his furlough had been cancelled, and ordering him to report back to camp immediately.  He returned yesterday.
