FORD COUNTY CEMETERY RECORDS
Elliott Cemetery
Dix Township
(burials prior to 1964)
This was a hand-typed, hand-bound book which did not bear a copyright date, but was probably compiled by the Governor
Thomas E. Ford Chapter of the DAR c. 1963. Many thanks to Gail Hahn Hutchcraft [ladybug@arends-sons.com]
for finding and transcribing this document for the benefit and free use of all Ford County, Illinois researchers.
The names in the book were presented in "close-to" alphabetical order, meaning they were placed within
the proper letter group. I've gone a step further and alphabetized the whole list. There are 117 burials listed
here.
ELLIOTT CEMETERY FORD COUNTY, IL
The Elliott Cemetery is located one half miles north of the village of Elliott, on the northwest corner of Section
11, Dix Twp. The first settlers came to this area before the railroad, the Lafayette, Bloomington and Mississippi,
was built in 1870 to 1872. It was financed through Ford County by the sale of stock authorized by the legal voters
of the county on Nov 6, 1867, to the amount of $112,000, amounting to $4000 per mile. The engineer corps engaged
for the construction of the railroad arrived in Paxton March 23, 1870. The village of Elliott was platted soon
after that date, on land given by three
of the early settlers: Samuel Elliott gave 20 acres, S.P. Bushnell 10 acres, and Gustav Punke 10 acres.
Burials of these early settlers were in country cemeteries: Ten Mile Grove (1862) Waggoner Cemetery (1862) and
Wallace Cemetery (1865). The Elliott Cemetery was not established until 1905. The first burial there was that of
James Stueland. This cemetery is well kept, maintained by Dix Twp. taxes.
