FORD COUNTY CEMETERY RECORDS
Waggoner Cemetery
(aka Blackford Cemetery)
Dix Township
(burials prior to 1964)
The original of this transcription was a hand-typed, hand-bound book which did not bear a copyright date, but was
probably compiled by the Governor Thomas E. Ford Chapter of the DAR c. 1963. Many thanks to Gail
Hahn Hutchcraft [ladybug@arends-sons.com] for finding and transcribing this document for the benefit and
free use of all Ford County, Illinois researchers. Since we first put this transcription online, Gail has added
to it. In addition, Rosemary Kurtz has contibuted to this listing, updating items as they are found.
The names in the book were originally presented in "close-to" alphabetical order, meaning they were placed
within the proper letter group. I've gone a step further and alphabetized the whole list. There are 233 burials
listed in the original book.
Located in the northwest part of Section 33, Dix Twp, Ford Co., Il (south of Elliot).
John S. Waggoner, owner of that land, gave three acrees of his farm to be used as a "free burying ground."
To this day no charge has been made for a grave-site, nor has any record been kept of the location of any grave.
Mr. Waggoner was born in Virginia and came to Ford County, settling on the land in Section 33, Dix Twp, in 1855.
As long as he lived, Mr. Waggoner cared for the cemetery; after his death, his sons John and J. continued this
practice until the farm was sold.
The cemetery was quite neglected except for the annual clean-up before Decoration Day, as there were no cemetery
trustees to supervise up-keep.
Following the passage of the Illinois Cemetery tax law about 1945, Charles Hamm, who was farming the land at that
time, contacted Dix Twp town officials in regard to a vote for the tax. This was done at the next town meeting.
The first burial in the cemetery was that of Harriett B. Blackford about 1861. The Rev. Orren, who was called "the
apostle of the Wabash" came through Ford County in 1855 and held the first religious service in the home of
John
Waggoner.
Several Civil War Veterans are buried here.
