Here's a little study I did with the 1870 census for Franklin County, IL. 

Most people on this list are enumerated as "Farmers".  The exceptions are Richeson,
Browning and Mooneyham who are listed as "Merchants"; Flanigan "Lawyer", WH Cook
"Physician"; and the ladies are listed as "Keeping House". The first column is value
of real estate the second column is value of movable property.


Important info:  $10,000 in 1870 is $154004.54 in the year 2007 dollars.
