BROWNING, Carroll & Mary
(includes photo)
OBSERVE 59TH ANNIVERSARY On April 9th Mr. and Mrs. Carroll BROWNING of Macedonia, will celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary. Mr. BROWNING is the son of Jonathan BROWNING and Louisa ALLEN BROWNING. He was born on Feb. 12, 1867 at BROWNING HILL close to Rend City. Mrs. BROWNING was born September 28, 1867 in St. Clair County near Freeburg. She is the daughter of James Carroll WILDERMAN and Elizabeth Ann HILL WILDERMAN. The WILDERMAN family moved to Franklin County and located near number nine school near where Twin Oaks, N. of Benton is now, when Mrs. BROWNING was a young girl. Mr. and Mrs. BROWNING are the parents of six children. Two sons, Ross and Stanley died when very young. Four children are still living, Robert, who is at home with his parents; Mrs. H.E. MOSS; Percy of San Francisco, Calif.; and Roy of Chicago. They have five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mr. BROWNING traces his ancestry back to one of the early settlers of Franklin County. His grandfather was John BROWNING who married Nancy KITCHEN about the year 1802, in the state of Tenn. In 1804 they came to what is now Franklin County, with the seven JORDAN brothers, who were uncles of John BROWNING. Together they built JORDANS' Fort, the first settlement in Franklin County. As far as can be determined, seventeen children were born to John and Nancy BROWNING. The children who reached maturity were, their sons, Luke, James K., William R., Jonathan (the father of Carroll), Levi, Joseph and Bennett. Their daughters were Jane, Martha (known as Patsy), Elizabeth Ann, and Polly. Luke, the oldest child, died when twenty years of age. He was the first person buried in the BROWNING HILL CEMETERY. Martha, who was the first female white child born in Franklin County, first married Calvin JONES and afterwards married Robert MOORE. Polly married Elija KING. Elizabeth married John KING. There is no record of the marriage of Jane BROWNING. James K. and William R. BROWNING were twins. They were born at the old JORDAN FORT on Dec. 24, 1810. James K. was the first white child born in Franklin County. His son, William R. BROWNING is still living on a farm North of Buckner. Jonathan (the father of Carroll A. BROWNING) was a triplet, Jonathan , Joseph, and Joab. Joab died when about eighteen months of age. It is said that John and Nancy BROWNING were the parents of still born twins and triplets. John BROWNING was a pioneer preacher of the Baptist faith. He was a charter member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church established in 1829, and was one of the two ministers who organized the First Baptist Church of Benton in 1841. The members of the BROWNING family have contributed much to the development of Franklin County. The house that Carroll A. BROWNING was born in is still standing at the Browning Hill cemetery. This was the first house built in Franklin County. Mr. and Mrs. Carroll BROWNING moved from BROWNING HILL to a farm in Eastern Township in the fall of 1909, where they still reside. Here they still maintain many of their early habits. They are firm believers that "Early to bed and Early to rise makes one healthy, wealthy and wise." They are in very good health considering their age. Their home is always open to their many friends and relatives. Their many acquaintances wish them many more happy anniversaries.
