KARNES, ELIZABETH "BESS"
MRS. ELIZABETH KARNES DIES IN WEST FRANKFORT
Mrs. Elizabeth "Bess" KARNES, 72, 704 W. Poplar St., West
Frankfort, died at 9:30 p. m. Saturday in Union Hospital,
West Frankfort, where she had been a patient two weeks.
Mrs. KARNES moved to West Frankfort from Galatia in 1917.
She was a member of the West Frankfort White Shrine, and the
Georgianna Chapter of the Eastern Star, West Frankfort, and
the West Frankfort First Baptist Church.
Mrs. KARNES, the daughter of William J. and Lucy HALE, was
born Jan. 19, 1888, in Raleigh. Her husband, Jeff KARNES,
died in 1956.
She leaves sons Gibson KARNES of West Frankfort; Willard
KARNES of Benton; sisters Mrs. Lucy KARNES of Bradenton,
Fla., Mrs. Fern BOLSTER and Mrs. W. M. JEWETT both of Flint,
Mich.; and two grandsons.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Union
Funeral Home, West Frankfort, with burial in the West
Frankfort Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery. The Rev. T. H.
KING, West Frankfort First Baptist Church pastor will
officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home.

KASH, SETH FRANKLIN

Seth Franklin Kash died at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, in Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in
Saint Louis, Mo. He was 3 days and 7 hours old, being born on Aug. 24, 1999 in Carbondale Memorial
Hospital. He was the son of Mike and Mary Susan (Grahlherr) Kash. Funeral services were held Sunday,
Aug. 29, at 3 p.m. in the Frisco Missionary Baptist Church, Ewing, with the Rev. Ralph Wilson officiating.
Burial was in Kirk Cemetery. The Newell Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon was in charge of arrangements.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Amy Kash at home; three brothers, Matt, Shane,
Jarrod, at home; paternal grandparents Bobby and Darlene Kash of Ina; maternal grandfather Fred Grahlherr
of Texico; maternal grandmother Rosa Lee Mezo of Mt. Vernon; paternal great-grandmother Jessie (Reynolds)
Birkhead of Mt. Vernon; paternal great-grandmother Sula Kash of Ina; maternal great-grandmother Fern (Grahlherr)
Odle of Ina; aunts and uncles Steve and Julia Ann (Grahlherr) Garrison of Lexington, Ky.; Dr. Ryan and Tara (Kash) Willis
of Rochester, Minn.; three cousins, Lynn Kash, Hailey and Alex Garrison. One infant sister, one uncle Dale Kash,
paternal great-grandfather Jack Reynolds; paternal great-grandfather Virgil Kash, maternal great-grandfather Bill
Grahlherr; maternal great-grandparents James Howard "Red" and June Mezo, preceded him in death. Memorials
may be made to the Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital. Seth weighed 3 pounds 14 ounces and was 16 inches
long. He knew his mommy's voice as he held tightly to her pinky finger. He and his Daddy had already made plans
for harvest. He will always be remembered as a sweet and loving baby. He came into our world so softly and
he only stayed a little while. But what an imprint his tiny footprints have left in our hearts forever. We thank God
for sending us such a precious gift.

Prominent Farmer of Northern Township Passed Away Sunday

_ _ _ _ Kearney, one of Franklin county's most highly respected citizens died at
his home in Northern Township Sunday morning following a short illness from a
complication of disease. He had reached the age of 79 years.
His widow and three children, Walter Kearney and Mrs. Ervin Clark of Macedonia, and
Mrs. Lucy Wilson of Joliet, survive him, together with a great host of other relatives
and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at the Liberty Baptist church Tuesday afternoon with
Rev. Russell Kilgore officiating. Interment was in the nearby cemetery

Ruth Ann Keller, 98, of Benton passed away Saturday, June 3, 2006,
at Helia Healthcare of Benton.
Davis Funeral Chapel is in charge of arraignments.
Ruth was born on July 1, 1907, in Cobden to William Carroll Craddock
and Goldie Mae (Banes) Craddock. Ruth spent her life as a homemaker
and was of the Baptist faith.
Ruth is survived by her sister, Jennie Lee Braden of Benton; two sons,
Fred Raubach and wife, Roberta, of Ottawa, Canada, and Karl Keller of
Benton; five daughters, Marguerite and late husband Harold McFarland of
El Paso, Texas, Barbara and husband Ross Batts of West Frankfort, Shirley
and late husband Donald Finney of West Frankfort, Agnes and late husband
Max Leffler of Benton, and Charlotte Cienki West Hazelton, Pa.; grandchildren,
Carolyn and Kimberly McFarland of El Paso, Texas, Cathy “Finney” Adams of
Galatia, Sandra Finney of Stiritz, Lynn, David, and Alex Batts of West Frankfort,
Larry and Jane Whiting of West Frankfort, Robbie Cienki of Virginia, Larry
Raubach of Canada, Rickie Barbie of Colorado, and Mark and Scott Raubach of
Colorado. Ruth also leaves 22 great-grandchildren, nine great great-grandchildren
and a special great-grandson, SSGT Derek R. Dodd of the 101st Airborne Division,
who is serving his second tour in Iraq. Ruth also leaves many nieces and nephews.
Ruth has been preceded in death by two husbands, Jake Raubach and Albert “Buck”
Keller; infant son, Victor Raubach; sons, JR. Raubach and Kenneth Keller; grandson,
Douglas Whiting; brothers Bob, Lee, Frances, Paul, William and Lindy Cradock; sisters,
Pearl Reed, Violet Calhoun, Ruby Taylor, Louise Braden, Maxine Whittington.
Graveside services for Ruth will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at Maple Hill
Cemetery in Sesser with Brother Gene Outland conducting the service. Friends are
asked to meet at the cemetery.
KELLEY, JOHN OLIVER
KELLEY, John Oliver, 71, died Oct. 12, 1951. He was born at Macedonia,
a son of T. D. and Nancy KELLEY. On Dec. 25, 1900 he was united in
marriage with Laura MOSS. To this union was born seven children: Mrs.
Leonard FRY, Magnolia; Mrs. Harl PRIOR and Mrs. Edward TIBEREND, Benton;
Mrs. Ewell BASHAM, Chicago; Mrs. Orpha HOLMAN, Cedar Point; Mrs. Charles
BARICH, Varnia; Emmett KELLEY, Richmond, CA. These all survive. His
wife preceded him in death Sept. 1, 1934. He was again married to
Gertrude QUILL in Feb. 1936. She preceded him in death Sept 21, 1948.
He was married to Betha MOSS June 13, 1950, who still survives. He was
saved in his early married life, and entered the ministry in 1924 and
continued until death. Besides the above mentioned, he leaves one
brother, George; one sister, Mrs. Flora MOORE, both of Chicago; 23
grandchildren, six great grandchildren. "His godly life and consecrated
ministry won for him many friends in Southern Illinois and adjoining
states. Funeral services at the Church of God, Benton, Rev. George E.
WOODS, Mt. Vernon, Indiana, officating. Interment at Antioch cemetery.

WEST FRANKFORT MAN DIES IN UNION HOSPITAL
Verne KELLEY, 65, 807 Warden St., West Frankfort, died at
7:50 p.m. Wednesday in Union Hospital, where he had been a
patient one week.
Mr. KELLEY was born Oct. 20, 1894, in Warden. He moved to
West Frankfort from Staunton 38 years ago.
Mr. KELLEY'S wife, Bertha, died Jan. 5.
He retired as a miner in 1953. He was a World War I veteran
and member of world War I Barracks 537 the American Legion
Post 389, both of West Frankfort.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Union funeral
Home, where friends may call. The Rev. Louis BIER, Lutheran
Church pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in tower
Heights Cemetery.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Reedy Funeral Home,
West Frankfort, for Lawrence W. Kellums, 62, of the Tomlinson Windy
Hills Farm, east of West Frankfort. Mr. Kellums died at 10:15 p.m.
Friday in Franklin Hospital, Benton, after an illness of several years.
He had been a patient 10 days. He was born Nov. 13, 1897, in Flora and
was a member of the Flora Presbyterian Church, Elks Lodge and American
Legion. He was a World War I and World War II veteran. He leaves wife,
Lucille and daughter, Miss Kay Kellums, at home. Burial will be in Tower
Heights Cemetery. The Rev. F. 0. McMartin, retired Presbyterian minister
of Carbondale, will officiate. The family requests persons donate money
to the cancer fund in lieu of flowers. Friends may call at the funeral home.

Mrs. Bertha KELLY, 67, 807 W. Warden St., West Frankfort,
died at 1:20 a.m. today in Union Hospital, where she had
been a patient since Sunday. She had been ill 14 years.
Mrs. KELLY was born June 15, 1892, in Staunton.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
She leaves husband Verne; brothers Ewald and Ted, both of
Cleveland, Ohio; sister Mrs. Lizzie TEMME of St Louis.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Union Funeral
Home, where friends may call after 7 p. m. today. The Rev.
Louis BIERS, St. Paul's Lutheran Church pastor, officiated.
Burial will be in Tower Heights Cemetery.

KELLY, John
Officer Slain in Dance Hall Melee.
Benton, Ill., May 17.--John KELLY, constable of Zeigler, a nearby mining town, was shot to death Sunday
night after killing two foreigners and wounding four others in a pistol duel in a dance hall where he
had gone to quell a disturbance.
Many of the dancers were intoxicated, according to the authorities, and the hall was in an uproar.
When KELLY attempted to disarm a man who was flourishing a revolver, it was said, he was attacked by
several other men and the shooting ensued.

Blake KERN of 1004 Fairland St died on Monday, May 19, 1997 at 1:10 pm at his home.

Mr. KERN was born March 16, 1937 in Benton, the son of Darrell and Aleta (OVERTURF) KERN
He married Sandra Kern in November of 1981 and she survives. He owned and operated the
Benton Locker Plant for several years and was employed by Bombarbia Boats at the time of
his death.
He served in the Army reserves and was a member of American Legion Post #280 of Benton
Survivors are his wife Sandra, his mother Aleta Kern of benton, one daughter, Kimberly
DeForrest and husband Jessie of Benton, three granddaughters, Aisha, Kailee and Tiaigan
Blake and three step-sons, Darren HANSEN and wife Pam of Buckner, Kyle HANSEN of christopher
and Dustim FORBY of Benton and eight step grandchildren.

KERN, CLIFFORD D.
KERN, Clifford D., 92, Macedonia, died early March 14, 1972 at Memorial
Hospital in Mt. Vernon. A lifelong resident of Franklin County, Mr.
KERN had led a varied career, including the teaching and banking fields,
and had also been a postmaster. (See Chapter V.) He was a member of
the Corinth Methodist Church at Macedonia, the International Order of
Odd Fellows and Modern Woodmen. He is survived by nine children: Howard
KERN, Anna; Ethard KERN, Whittington; Dallas KERN, Waukegan; Robert KERN
and Miss Nellie KERN, both of Macedonia; Mrs. Mary JONES, Gary, IN; Mrs.
Kathleen SANDERS, Waukega; Mrs. Beulah LAHTI, Paris and Mrs. Helen
BEARCE, Addison. He also leaves 21 grandchidlren, 27 great
grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren, and four brothers and
sisters: James KERN, Belle Rive; Glenn KERN, Cincinnati, OH; Mrs. Nellie
EPPERSON, Westfield and Mrs. Iva ROTTA, Elsinore, CA. He was preceded
in death by his wife, Savanah SULLIVAN KERN; three sons, a daughter,
three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services at Johnston Funeral
Home, Whittington, Rev. Mary ERWIN officiating. Interment in Sullivan
Family Cemetery.
KERN, Darrell, 72, of 611 Highland Street, Benton, died unexpectedly Friday,
December 6, 1985, at Franklin Hospital. Mr. KERN had retired after operating
restaurants in the Benton area for many years. His Benton Cafe was a long time
fixture on West Main Street in Benton. He was a member of North Benton Baptist
Church. Surviving are his wife, Aleta OVERTURF KERN; a son, Blake KERN, Benton;
a granddaughter, Kimberly KERN; a great grandchild and a sister, Mrs. Gene
(Eileen) SHAW, Benton. His parents were the late Liza and Mamie CLINTON KERN.

88-year-old former McLeansboro resident, Edna V. Kern of Summerfield, IL, died at
2:10 p.m. Monday, April 23, at her home. She was a retired supervisor at Southern
Wisconsin Living Center in Union Grove, WI. She was born on August 18, 1918 in
Franklin County, IL.
Survivors include a son, Arol Wayne Kern of Racine, WI; two daughters, Janet Linkey
of Summerfield, IL and Lila Jean Gholson of Belton, TX; nine grandchildren, five
step-grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Services for Edna V. Kern will be
1 p.m. Friday, April 27, at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with burial
in the Masonic-Oddfellows Cemetery at Benton, IL. Visitation will be from 5 - 8
Thursday, April 26, at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.

KERN, Etherd B., 70, Whittington, died at Franklin Hospital April 9,
1980. Mr. KERN, a retired accountant, was a member of Macedonia
Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Venita BAXTER KERN, and a
daughter, Mrs. Melba UNITIS, Boiling Springs, PA. He also leaves four
grandchildren: three brothers, Hayward KERN, Anna; Dallas KERN, Waukegan
and Robert KERN, Paris; and five sisters, Mrs. Nellie KERN and Mrs.
Beulah LAHTI, both of Paris; Mrs. Mary JONES, McLeansboro; Mrs.
Kathelene SANDERS, Waukegan and Mrs. Helen BEARCE, Addison. His parents

KERN, Hayward, 81, died at 11:17 a.m. Feb. 18, 1987 in Union County
Hospital. Mr. KERN was retired from the Anna Mental Health and
Development Center. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, and a member of Masonic
Lodge 520 AF & AM and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Carroll P. Foster
Post 3455. He served during WWII. He was born Nov. 6, 1905 in
Macedonia, a son of Clifford and Savanna SULLIVAN KERN. He married
Jeanette BLACKMAN on Oct. 20, 1944. She survives. Other survivors
include one son, Leonard KERN of Anna; two brothers, Dallas KERN of
Waukegan and Bob KERN of Thompsonville; and five sisters, Kathleen
SANDERS of Waukegan, Helen BEARCE of Addison, Nellie KERN of Carbondale,
Mary JONES of McLeansboro and Beulah LAHTI of Paris. Funeral services
held at Crain Funeral Home. Interment with military rites in Anna
Cemetery.

Mary Alyce Kern. 76, went home to be with the Lord at 12:04 am Saturday April 20, 2002,
at her home, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
She was born Feb 19, 1926 in Benton to Albert Lewis and Leota (Britton) Browne. She
married Ernest Kern March 1, 1944 in Benton and he survives.
Other survivors include four children: Albert Dean Kern and wife Janice of San Diego,
CA; Jean Stevenson and husband Roger of Pheoniz, AZ; Susan Quindry and husband Charles
of Benton and David Kern and wife Laura of West Frankfort. Eight Grandchildren; Todd
Kern and Tara Kuenhert and husband Matt of San Diego, CA; Leanne Stevenson of Tocoma,
WA Shawn Stevenson and Tammi Stevenson of Phonix, AZ, Ericka Hunter and husband Shawn
of Duluth, GA, Mindy Williams of Benton and Ashley Kern of West Frankfort.; one great
grandchild Qynton Stevenson of Phoenix, AZ; and one sister Ruth Ann Carter and husband
Bill of Nashville, TN.
She was preceded in death by her parents and twin brothers, Johnnie and Jim Browne.
She was a member of the Second Baptist Church of West Frankfort where she served as a
teacher, Church Treasurer for the past 28 years. She was a member of the Frankfort
Area Historical Society, where she served as President and Librarian. She was a member
of John A. Logan Genealogy Society and a member of Garrett's Prairie Home Extension.
She was a former 4-H leader for some 25 years and an Associational WMU direct for
Franklin Baptist Association.
Funeral services for Mary Alyce Kern will be held Monday April 22, 2002 at 11 am in
the Second Baptist Church with Rev. Brett Beasley, officiating and burial will be in
Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. Friends may call at Parker -Reedy Funeral
Home in West Frankfort after 5 pm today and after 9 am Monday at the church,
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Frankfort Historical Mesuem or to the
Second Baptist Church, building fund and will be accepted at the funeral home.
KETTEMAN, GEORGE W.
George W Ketteman, prominent Northern Township citizen, died yesterday, aged 79.
He was born in Indiana and came to Illinois when 18 (13?) years of age. He
leaves three children: Jack Ketteman of Macedonia; Mrs. Eli Williford, Mt Vernon;
and Mrs. Lee Cross, Maywood, Illinois. Also surviving are one brother, W E Ketteman,
Benton; and two sisters: Mrs. Ida Campbell, Fort Wayne, Indiana; and Mrs. Betty Coffee,
St Louis, MO. Burial will take place at Middle Fork Cemetery.

KETTEMAN, VIOLA WARREN
Viola WARREN KETTEMAN, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.F. WARREN, was born
in Northern township, March 16, 1879. Her father and mother were devout
Christians and pioneer farmers of Franklin county. In her teens she was
converted and joined Webbs Prairie Freewill Baptist Church. She was married
days.
March 3, 1898 to William Earl KETTEMAN. Thirteen children were born to this
union, five of whom are deceased. She spent most of her married life in
Benton and moved her membership to the First Baptist Church. She was an
active member until six years ago when she became ill. She bore her
sufferings patiently and quietly and God called her home December 11 at
Augustana hospital in Chicago at the age of 71 years, eight months and 25
days.
She leaves her aged mother, Mary Jane WARREN of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; three
sisters, Mrs. Della GIFFORD and Birdie ODLE of Mt. Vernon and Gladys
BLAKESLEY of Elgin, Illinois; one brother, Wilson WARREN of this city. She
also leaves five daughters, Mrs. Ruth EATON, Mrs. Mary EWING and Mrs.
Italene MISPLAY, all of Benton; Mrs. Permelia CARBAUGH, Southgate,
California and Mrs. Pansy GARR of Fort Wayne, Indiana; three sons, Dr.
Charles KETTEMAN of Chicago, Johny KETTEMAN of Benton and Billy KETTEMAN of
Peoria, now in the armed forces.

Guy Kenneth "Kenny" Kimmel, 18, of Ewing, died Wednesday morning July 7, 1999 at the Freeman
West Hospital in Joplin, Mo. Kenny was born in Mt. Vernon, on April 26, 1981. He attended Benton
High School, and was active in basketball, football and track during his school years. He was a member
of the Fellowship of Christian Students. He enjoyed computers and art. He was a member of the Whittington
Baptist Church. He is survived by his parent, Sandra Kimmel Marquis and her husband Barry, of Fredericktown,
Mo. Two brothers, Zebulon and Eli Marquis and Eric Mullins; sisters, Rhiannon and Shannon Marquis; grandmother,
Guyula Jones of Shelbyville; grandparents, Mike and Liz Marquis of Mt. Vernon; great-grandmother, Mary "Meme"
Marquis of Mt. Vernon; grandparents, Alvin and Mary Stich and family of Dahlgren; uncles and aunts, Darrell and
Irma Kimmel of Ewing, Terry and Mary Kimmel of Pana, Pam and Donnie Gibson of Mt. Vernon, Rod and Pam Ford
of Mt. Vernon. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Kenneth Raymond Kimmel. Services will be at 2 p.m.

Funeral services for Ethel KING, 80, of 541 Smith St.,
Benton, will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Hobbs-Johnson
Funeral Home in Benton.
Mrs. KING died Saturday in Franklin Hospital in Benton after
a brief illness.
She was born Oct. 21, 1893 in Franklin County to John and
Lenora SCRIVNER PEARCE.
For 42 years, Mrs. KING was the owner, and operator of
hotels in Sesser, Du Quoin and Benton.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Du Quoin.
Mrs. KING was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas, in
1968.
She is survived by a sister, Mildred PEARCE of Benton.
The Rev. Rex D. WILSON will officiate at the funeral
service. Burial will be in the Middlefork Cemetery in Ewing.

ARIZONA MAN DIES; RITES IN WEST FRANKFORT
Bill KING, 42 Ray, Arizona died Thursday at his home.
He married the former Bess Clark WILLMORE in 1958 and the couple moved to
Arizona. Mr. KING was a mechanic.
He leaves his wife as his only survivor. Funeral services will be
at 2 p.m. Monday at Stone Funeral Home, the Rev Cecil WALKER, pastor of the
West Frankfort Free Will Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in
Boner Cemetery.

DIES IN KENTUCKY
Mrs. Margaret KING, 93, a former resident of Sesser, died
Thursday at the home of her son, John Byford KING in
Henderson, Ky.
She was born in Franklin County, May 8, 1874, the daughter
of Milton and Margaret REA WILLIAMS.
She was married to John KING who preceded her in death.
Mrs. KING was a member of a Baptist church.
She leaves her son; a daughter, Mrs. Laura NORTH, of Herrin;
a sister, Mrs. Pearl BEST, of Sesser; and brothers, John,
Oscar and Bob.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today at the Lynn-Hill
Funeral Home, Sparta with the Rev. J. C. GREER officiating.

KING, THOMAS J.
THOMAS J. KING DIES IN NURSING UNIT
Thomas J. KING, 74, of 200 W. Main St., Benton, died at 5:30
a.m. Saturday in the Franklin Skilled Care Nursing Unit,
Benton, after an illness of several years.
He was born May 16, 1893, in Franklin County, the son of
James and Sarah GALLOWAY KING.
Mr. KING was a veteran of World War I and a member of the
First Baptist Church of Du Quoin and American Legion Post
280 in Benton.
He owned and operated the Kingsway Motel in Benton.
Surviving are his widow, the former Ethel PEARCE; a sister,
Mrs. Clyde HAFELI Sr. of Centralia and a brother Baker KING
of Southgate, Mich.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today in Hobbs-Johnson
Funeral Home in Benton with the Rev. William F. BOHN
officiating. Burial will be in the Middle Fork Cemetery
northeast of Benton.

KINNEAR, GEORGE E.
George E. KINNEAR, 74, of Thompsonville, passed away at 4 a.m. Thursday, Jan.
31, 2008, at his home. He was born in Hamilton County on Dec. 18, 1933, a son of
Hal and Jewell (PARMLEY) KINNEAR. He was a retired gauger for Chevron Oil
Company in California. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Gholson
Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Gerald "Andy" MAY will officiate.
Interment will follow at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in McLeansboro with full graveside
military rites by American Legion Post 106. Friends may call from 12 noon Sunday
until time of service at the funeral home.
George is survived by a son, Darrell KINNEAR of Dahlgren; a daughter, Debra
deSOCIO of Chapel Hill, N.C.; three grandchildren, Matthew MILLENBINE, Barbara
Louise MILLENBINE and Michael PARKER, all of McLeansboro; and special friend,
Ray STINSON and wife Shelly of McLeansboro. Several nieces and nephews also
survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Georgia Kay GRANT;
two brothers, Ronnie and Joe KINNEAR; one sister, Blanche KENNEDY; and one
grandchild, Mark MILLENBINE. George was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Lorene Kirk, 80, died at 10:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, in the Fair Acres
Nursing Home in Du Quoin. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First
Christian Church in Sesser, with Brother Dan Williams and Brother Shannon Bopp
officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser. Friends may call from
5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the First Christian Church in Sesser, and after 9 a.m. until
time of service Saturday in the church. The Johnston Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon is
in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Kirk was born on May 9, 1919, in Perry County,
the daughter of Joe and Nettie (Span) Thompson. She was married to William (Bud)
Kirk on Jan. 7, 1937 in Jefferson County. He survives. She worked at Kirk's Flowers
in Sesser. In addition to her husband Bud, she is survived by three sons, William
P. Kirk and wife Paula of Sesser, Danny L. Kirk and wife Diana of Sesser, Bob Kirk
of Sesser; three daughters, Patsy Dickey and husband Wesley of Sesser, Paula
Wilkerson of Goreville, Judy Eckels and husband Richard of Sesser; ten grandchildren;
18 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; one sister, Alvena Dagler of
Cape Girardeau, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents, one granddaughter,
seven sisters and one brother.
KNIGHT, DELMAR
KNIGHT, Delmar, 67, died Feb. 22, 1983 at his home, 843 Church Street,
Bridgeport. Mr. Knight was a native of Benton, born Nov. 18, 1916 to
Paul and Blanche HAMILTON KNIGHT. He also formerly lived in Macedonia.
Mr. Knight was a retired employee of the Marathon Oil Company, and was a
veteran of US Army service during WWII. He was a member of Macedonia
Masonic Lodge 1128, and American Legion Post 62, Bridgeport. He is
survived by his wife, Wanda METHENEY KNIGHT; two sons, Kenneth E.
KNIGHT, East Alton and Stephen L. KNIGHT, Goreville; three grandchildren
and a brother, Paul Knight, Jr., Beecher. Funeral services at Johnson
Funeral Home, McLeansbor, Rev. Carrol Phillips officiating. Interment
in Antioch Cemetery.
KOTVAL, JR., JOHN DONALD
Benton
John D. Kotval, Jr., 67, of 1209 Highland St., Benton, passed peacefully from this
life into the arms of our Lord after an extended illness on Oct. 2, 1999. Mr. Kotval
was born Oct. 23, 1931, the son of the late Rev. John Kotval, Sr.and Hattie Kotval,
who survives from Jacksonville, Florida. For 41 years, the husband of his devoted
wife and friend, the former Anzel Kay Rice, who survives. Two children, both living,
his son Donald Kotval of Columbia, Tennnessee and his daughter, Paula Kotval
Learned of Bradley, Ill. Mr. Kotval moved to Benton in 1986 after 35 years of faithful
service to the AT & T Corportion from which he retired. He also served his country
in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He was a member of the Church of the
Nazarene in Benton. His sisters, Helen Roberts of Champaign and Sandra McBroom of
Jacksonville, Florida; and a brother, Jerry Kotval of Londonderry, New Hampshire
survive him. A second brother, Charles Kotval, predeceased him. One of the many
joys of his life was the time spent with his four grandchildren, Stephanie, Jonathan,
Courtney, and David. The family requests that donations be sent to Olivet Nazarene
University Foundation of Kankakee. A scholarship in his name has been established
to help ministerial students. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday,
Oct. 6, in the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Don Colson
officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. Friends

WEST FRANKFORT -- Lois E. Kramer, 74, of West Frankfort, died at 11:50 p.m.
Tuesday, May 2, 2006, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.She was born Dec. 25,
1931, in Chicago, the daughter of Martin and Celelia (Arndt) Mendelson.She married
Frank Kramer Feb. 19, 1955, in Chicago.She was a homemaker.She is a member of
St. John’s Catholic Church in West Frankfort.Lois was a loving, caring wife, mother
who loved her dogs Coco and Buttons.Survivors include her husband, Frank Kramer
of West Frankfort; three sons, Jim (Diane) Kramer of West Frankfort, John Kramer
of West Frankfort of Joe (Liz) Kramer of Novata, Calif.; eight daughters, Eleanor
Travis of Marion, Betty Cusick of West Frankfort, Linda (Cecil) Plock of West

BENTON -- Doris F. Kulich, 49, of Benton, died at 2:15 p.m. Friday, May 5, 2006
at the Good Samaritan Regional Health Center, Mount Vernon.Visitation will be
from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, May 8, 2006, at Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton.
Services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Roger
Ellsworth officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery in
Benton.Mrs. Kulich was born Sept. 13, 1956, in Oak Park, the daughter of Frank
Shuping and Imogene (Snider) Shuping. She married Frank Kulich on Nov. 18, 1972,
and he survives.She was a housewife, mother, grandmother and enjoyed spending
time with her family.Surviving relatives include her husband, Frank H. Kulich,
Benton; two sons, Frank James Kulich and fiancée Sarah, Benton, Brian Kulich and
wife Heather, Sesser; four grandchildren, Justin, Frank Wayne, Jordan, and Karlie
Kulich; a half-brother, Robert Canada, Rockdale; two sisters, Gloria Shuping,
Jacksonville, Ariz., Gail Firkins, Akin; a very supportive brother-in-law, Larry
Baker, Benton; and several nieces and nephews.Mrs. Kulich was preceded in death
by her parents and two sisters, Karen Baker and Diane Cravens.In lieu of flowers,
