TAGGART, CHRISTINA MARIAN
Benton
Christina Marian Taggart, 95, of Benton died at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18,
2008, at her home.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at the Hobbs-Johnson
Funeral Home in Benton. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the
funeral home with the Rev. Dr. David G. Hultberg officiating. Burial will be
in the Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of
Benton or Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral
home.
Mrs. Taggart was born Nov. 7, 1912, in Christopher, the daughter of Ernest
Lambert and Roxie (Corn) Lambert. She married Maynard E. Taggart and he
preceded her in death Sept. 21, 1988.
Christina received her Bachelor of Education degree from MacMurray College
and her Master of Science in Home Economics Education from the University of
Illinois. She was a teacher in the Brownston and Cicero public schools for
26 years, retiring in 1965.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Benton, the Retired
Teachers Association, Home Extention, Genealogical Society, Daughters of the
American Revolution and the Daughters of 1812.
Surviving relatives include two nieces, Janis McCurley of St. Louis and
Joyce Hughes of Manassas, Va.; and several other nieces, nephews and
cousins.
Mrs. Taggart was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister, Nina
Cline; and two brothers, Phillip V. Lambert and Ernest Paul Lambert.

Funeral Held at Sesser Today for "Bud" Taylor
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Baptist Church of Sesser for
E A "Bud" Taylor, who passed away Sunday morning at 4:30 at his home in that city. Services
were conducted by Rev. W. A. Gray of Nashville, assisted by Rev. T. H. Dorris. Interment
was made in the Maple Hill cemetery with the Brayfield Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Taylor has been ill the past month and just recently had undergone an operation in the
Union Hospital at West Frankfort.
He was born January 14, 1878, the son of Richard and Maria Robinson Taylor and had lived his
life in Sesser.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs Nellie Taylor; five sons, Arlie, Alva, Clarence, and Richard of
Sesser and Noah of St Louis; two daughters, Mrs Ruby Jones and Miss Clarabelle of Sesser;
three brothers, Jack, Willis and Marion Taylor of Sesser, and three sisiters, Mrs Della
Mendenhall of Michigan, and Mrs Minnie Cockrum and Mrs Sadie Hall of Sesser.

Floyd B. Taylor, 73, died in his home at 9:05 p.m. on June 3, 1999. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m.
Sunday, June 6, in the Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, Marion, at 800 North Market St. The Rev. Max Samples
will officiate. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton. Friends may call from 5 to
9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Mr. Taylor was born in Benton on March 16, 1925, the son of Elmer
and Edna (Jackson) Taylor. He was married on Oct. 2, 1948, to Virginia (Galloway) Taylor. She died Aug.
18, 1991. He served during World War II in the Army. He enjoyed and loved being with his family. He was
a member of the Second Baptist Church, VFW Post #1301. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis
and Ruth Ann Taylor of Marion; three daughters and sons-in-law, Patty and Glen Wittnam of Marion, Mary Jo
and Jerry Odum of Marion, Sheri Lynne and Brian Metzger of Marion; six grandsons, Joseph Bryant Taylor, ,
Matthew Ryan Wittnam, Mark Bryant Taylor, Joshua Taylor Odum, Hunter O'Neal Odum, all of Marion; a granddaughter,
Amanda Rae Wittnam of Marion; two brothers, Richard Taylor, Decatur, Jimmy Taylor of Benton; three sisters,
Dorothy Monterastelli of Ottawa, Phyllis McGlasson of Decatur, Ruth Ann Siliven of Decatur. Mr. Taylor was
preceded in death by is parents, wife, one brother, Harley Taylor and one sister, Milded Anthony. Memorials
may be given to the Southern Illinois Hospice.

Death Ends Life of Mrs. Ida Taylor (Benton newspaper: no date)
Death at 4:30 o'clock this morning closed the life of Mrs. Ida Taylor at the home of her
daughter Mrs. Roy Goodin, 208 Election street.
Mrs. Taylor had been in ill health for the past three months and her death anticipated for
several days. She had reached the age of 73 years, 10 months and 20 days.
A daughter of Lewis and Louisa Payne, deceased, was born in Northern township in 1851. She
was the widow of the late Theodore Taylor.
She was a member of the First Baptist church of Benton, Rebekah and Royal Neighbor lodges,
being active in each organization until her health forced her indoors.
Two children survive, Mrs. Ethel Goodin, Benton and Ralph Taylor of Gary, Ind. She is also
survived by two half-brothers and one half-sister, Guy Kelley of Edgewood, Ill; Carroll
Browning, Macedonia, and Mrs. Charles Rea, Gary, Ind.
Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist church Wednesday afternoon at
2 o’clock with the pastor, Rev J L Meads, officiating. Interment will follow at the
Masonic and Odd Fellows cemetery with the Freeman Funeral Home in charge.
IDA MAY TAYLOR (Benton Evening News: no date)
Ida May Taylor was a kind and Christian woman. She was born in Northern Township,
Franklin County, Illinois on February 23, 1862. She died at her home in the city of
Benton on the morning of January 20, 1936. She was a daughter of Jesse G and Louisa
Allen Payne. She was fortunate in her ancestry. Her parents were members of two
of the oldest and best families of Franklin County. Her mother was a sister of a
pioneer Baptist preacher, Rev Calvin Allen.
Mrs. Taylor was left fatherless at a very early age. Her father enlisted in the Union
Army. He was an officer in the 110th Regiment, Illinois Infantry. He was killed at the
battle of Stone River, Tennessee on December 31, 1862.
On October 28, 1883 at Benton, Illinois, she was married to Theodore D. Taylor. To them
were born two sons, Otho and Ralph, and a daughter, Ethel, wife of Roy Goodin. Her
husband and son Otho preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, her daughter,
her brother, Louis G Payne, her half-brothers, William M Payne, Carroll Browning, and
Guy Kelley, and her half-sisters Mrs. Jennie Rea and Mrs. Janie Nooner. She had six
grandchildren.
She was for many years a member of Benton Camp No 874, Royal Neighbors of America and
Benton Rebekah Lodge No 664. On November 20, 1903 she united with the First Baptist
church of Benton, Illinois and remained a member thereof until her death.
Ida May Taylor realized her greatest ambition: to be a good and faithful wife and mother.
Her husband died when her son Ralph and her daughter Ethel were children, and she
reared them carefully and well. Her unselfish, helpful life has left its impress on this
community. She will long be remembered for; to live in hears we leave behind us is not
to die.

Willis A. TAYLOR died Monday in St. Louis Hosptial and he was born at Webbs Prairie
on June 30, 1859 and died June 18, 1917 at the age of 64 years and 8 days, On Aug
17, 1871 he married Jennis Burris and they had the following children; Lilliam, wife
of John Outhouse; Cora wife of E. S. Crosslin, Tolbert, Herbert, Margaret, Audry, Oscar,
Paul and Fred died in infancy.

Willis A. "Birthday" Taylor Jr. died at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at the Benton
HealthCare Center.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home
in Benton, with the Revs. Roger Ellsworth and Ron Cremeens officiating. Burial will be in
the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday to
the funeral home.
Mr. Taylor was born in Franklin County, the son of Willis A. Taylor Sr. and Margaret Ann
(Lawson) Taylor. On Sept. 18, 1932, in Ewing, he married the former Wilma Bays. She
preceded him in death on Feb. 7, 1983.
He was a Teamster and a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Benton, and the Benton
Masonic Lodge #64 A.F. & A.M.
He is survived by one son, Clyde A. Taylor and wife Linda of Cave Creek, Az.; two daughters,
Lorene Rizer and husband Ben of Lisle, Ruby Lynn Bryan and husband Aaron of Fairview
Heights; 8 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Taylor was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Wilma M. Taylor, five sisters
and three brothers.

Mary M. Temporiti, 90, a former Benton resident, died at 4:56 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16,
1999 in the Marshall County Hospital in Benton, Ky. Funeral services will be held at 11
a..m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev.
Father Donald Lenzini officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery in

Mrs. Temporiti was born in Thurber, Texas on Aug. 10, 1909 to John and Louise (Dellomia)
Reginato. She was married to Ceasar Temporiti, who died on Aug. 22, 1988. Mary was a member
of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Benton. She is survived by one son, Charles R. Temporiti
and wife Sue of Gilbertsville, Ky.; one granddaughter, Barbara Temporiti of Calvert City,
Ky.; one grandson, Mark Temporiti of Murray, Ky.; one great-granddaughter, Kimberly Reed
and husband Kevin of Gilbertsville; two great-grandchildren, Lauren and Blake Reed; one sister,
Cecelia Anderson of Benton; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her
parents, husband, four brothers and two sisters.

THOMAS, EVELYN PEARL
Evelyn Pearl Thomas, 80, of Royalton died at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, October 11,
1996 at her home. Mrs. Thomas was born May 15, 1916 in Royalton, the daughter of
George Matthew and Iva Bell (Gladden) Walden. She married James Cullman Thomas on
October 12, 1935 in Royalton, and he preceded her in death on August 7, 1992. She
was a homemaker and a member of the Royalton United Methodist Church and Senior
Citizens. Survivors include a three daughters, Sharon Pinkerton of Royalton, Marie
Broshears and husband James of Royalton, and Peggy Carpenter and husband Don of
Zeigler; four grandchildren, Mick Pinkerton of Hurst, Angie Webb of Royalton,
Donnie Carpenter of Zeigler and Amy Furlow of Christopher; two great-granddaughters,
Jessica Webb and Courtney Webb of Royalton; and two brothers, Roy Walden of Marseilles
and Lawrence Walden of Marion. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter
Barbara Jean Thomas, sisters Emma Parrish, Arla Ray and Clova Ross, and brothers
Raymond, Fred and Jean Walden. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Monday,
October 14, 1996 at the United Methodist Church in Royalton. Interment was in
Miner's Cemetery in Royalton. Vantrease Funeral Home in Royalton was in charge

FRED THOMAS DIES IN BENTON HOSPITAL
Fred Thomas, 80, lifelong resident of Sesser, died Friday in Franklin
Hospital, Benton. He was born Aug. 24, 1887, in Franklin County, son of Barton and
Emily Stroud Thomas. He was a retired coal miner and member of the Sesser
Masonic AF and AM Lodge 918. Mr. Thomas leaves his wife, the former Veva
Clampet; sons, Nobel of Mt. Vernon and Ivan of Sesser, five grandchildren and three
great grandchildren; and a sister, Della Downen, of Christopher. Funeral
services will be at 3:30 p.m. today in the Sesser Christian Church, with the Rev.
Robert Grider officiating. Burial will be in Knight Cemetery near Buckner,
where Masonic Rites will be conducted. Friends may call at the Brayfield
Funeral Home, Sesser.

evening at the funeral home. Mrs. Thompson was born on Feb. 16, 1915, in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Van
and Martha (Rightnowar) Beckham. She was married to Claude Thompson, who died Feb. 22, 1979. She was
a retired nurse and served in World War II as an Army nurse. She was of the Baptist faith. Survivors
include two daughters, Jackie Britt and husband Tim, Granite City, Darlene Davis and husband James of
Garden Prairie; a close friend, Charles Barnard of West Frankfort; three grandchildren; one sister,
Nellie Clark of Mt. Vernon. Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers

Funeral services for Bertha Threlkeld, 76, will be held Sunday at 1:00
p.m. at the First Christian church of McLeansboro with the pastor, Rev.
Smith, officiating.
Burial will be held in Phillips cemetery in Franklin county.
Mrs. Threlkeld died at 10 p.m. Thursday at Vickers' Memorial Hospital.
The body will remain at the Donelson Funeral Home where friends may call
until the funeral hour.
Mrs Threlkeld was born in Franklin county September 13, 1875.
She was married to Ben Threlkeld, who survives.
Mrs. Threlkeld was a member of the First Christian church.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three brothers, Alvah and Harvey
Kirk of RFD 2, Benton and Ora Kirk of Springfield; and four sisters, Joyce
Smith and Lydia Frailey of RFD 2, Benton, Lula Rogers of Wenatchee, Wash.
and Katie Payne of Whittington.

Harry Threlkeld, 78, died at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, July 10, 1999 as a result of an automobile accident.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 16, in the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home, with the
Rev. Roger Ellsworth officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery. Friends may
call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday to the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton. Mr. Threlkeld was born
in Benton, on Sept. 16, 1920, the son of Oscar and Beulah (Schram) Threlkeld. He married Wanda Epps on
Dec. 14, 1940. She survives. He had worked in the CC Camps; as a farmer; a welder in the Evansville Ind.
Shipyards; at Peyton's block plant, as a construction laborer, and as a custodian at Benton Grade schools.
He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church, the Rend Lake Ramblers and Shawnee Sam's Camping club.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Threlkeld of Benton; daughter Rita Doty and husband Kenneth of Benton;
a son, Richard Threlkeld and wife Marlene of Carbondale; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren;
two sisters, Callie Russell and husband Jerry of Benton and Nadine Neal of Decatur. He was preceded in
death by his parents and by three brothers, Bert, Charles and Milford. Memorials may be made to the Immanuel

Regional Health Center, Mt. Vernon. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Hobbs-Johnson
Funeral Home, Benton. Burial will be in the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton. Visitation will be
from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Toms was born March 12, 1936, in Benton, the daughter
of George Thorpe and Ada (Harrison) Thorpe. She married Lamont Toms on Sept. 14, 1956, and he survives.
She was a housewife. Survivors include her husband, Lamont Toms, Benton; a nephew, Leonard Wininger, Benton;
a sister Elsie Broughton, Benton, and a brother, Bob Thorpe, Benton. She was preceded in death by her mother.
TUCKER, ELSIE
Set services for MRS. ELSIE TUCKER - died Fri, Jan.19, 1968 Mrs. Elsie Tucker,
77, of rural Ewing, died yesterday afternoon at the home of her daughter. She
had been sick several months. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Oak
Hill Free Will Baptist Church. Mrs. Tucker was a member of the Oak Hill Church.
The Rev. Jesse Allen will officiate for services.
Burial will be in the church cemetery under direction of the Mitchell Funeral Home.
The body will be taken from the funeral home to the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Mrs. Tucker was the daughter of Joab and Julianne Bevis Neal. Her husband, Robert
Tucker, survives. Other survivors: A daughter, Mrs. Ray (Ruth) Hughes of rural
Ewing; a son, Paul Tucker of Northern township; a sister, Mrs. Leonard (Ethel)
Moore of rural Macedonia, and a brother, S. L. Neal, of Frisco.

Goldman TUCKER, 68, of Sesser, died Saturday morning at his
home.
Born Jan. 6, 1902 in Franklin County, he was the son of
Monroe and Lula BATES TUCKER. He was married 50 years ago to
Fannie HARRISON.
A retired farmer and miner, he was a member of Hazel Dell
Baptist Church, near Sesser.
He leaves his wife, of Sesser; daughters, Mrs. Idella
MONTGOMERY of Sesser and Mrs. Wilma COCKRUM of Rt. 3 Benton;
a son, Dempsey of Rt. 1 Sesser; a sisters, Mrs. Gladys WINGO
of Sesser; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Hazel Dell Baptist
Church, with the Rev. Floyd HARTLEY and the Rev. Melvin
KNOTT officiating.
Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Sesser. Friends may

LAWRENCE TUCKER DIES
Funeral Services Monday For Sesser Resident
Lawrence A. TUCKER, 62, of 304 W. Franklin St., Sesser, died
a7:15 p. m. Friday in the Franklin Hospital, Benton, where
he had been a patient eight days.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Monroe and Lula TUCKER, he was born
June 20, 1899, in Franklin County.
Mr. TUCKER was a retired miner. He and his wife owned and

He leaves his wife, the former Freda MERKEL; his mother,
Mrs. Lula TUCKER; three daughters Mrs. Geneva CURRY, Mrs.
Imogene FRANK and Mrs. Lula Bell ODUM, all of Sesser; a
sister Mrs. Gladys WINGO, Sesser; brother Goldman TUCKER,
Rt. 3, Benton; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
His father and twin daughters preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p. m. at the Bear Point
Baptist Church with the pastor, Rev. Lawrence THOMPSON,
assisted by Rev. C. R. EVITTS, officiating.
Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Sesser.
Friends may call at the Brayfield Funeral Home, Sesser,
after 2 p.m. today.

MRS. LULA TUCKER, 83, DIES TUESDAY
Mrs. Lula TUCKER, 83, of Sesser, died at 5 a.m. Tuesday in
Franklin Hospital, Benton, where she had been a patient.
Mrs. TUCKER had been in ill health for some time.
She was born Sept. 6, 1880, the daughter of K. B. and
Melinda LEWIS BATES. Her husband, Monroe, died in 1945.
She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Gladys WINGO, and son, Goldman
TUCKER, both of Sesser; a sister, Mrs. Racheal STOCKTON, and
brothers, Noah and Edmond BATES, all of Sesser; 11
grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and four
great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Hazeldale
Church, Sesser, with Rev. Everett BEATY and Rev. Fred BECK
officiating.
Burial will be in Horse Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call
today at the Brayfield Funeral Home, Sesser.

Formerly of Akin and Benton
Verna Muriel TUCKER, 90, of Bolivar, Tenn., a former Akin and Benton resident,
died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at Northbrooke Health Care Center, Jackson, Tenn.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the
Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home in Benton. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m.
Thursday at the Brady Cemetery in Akin with the Rev. Newton TUCKER officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association and will be
accepted at the funeral home.
Mrs. TUCKER was born April 17, 1917, in Benton, the daughter of Burrell ROSS and
Mary Lola (FISHER) She married Jasper Newton TUCKER, and he preceded her in
death on Nov. 17, 1993. She was a housewife and a member of the Bethel
Missionary Baptist Church in Macedonia. Surviving relatives include four sons,
Ralph Eugene TUCKER of Branson, Mo., Newton Jerald TUCKER of Dayton, Ohio,
Burrell Lewis TUCKER of Hobbs, N.M., and Bill TUCKER of Bolivar, Tenn.; 11
grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; one
sister, Ruth RABE of Crescent City; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. TUCKER
was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

TURNER, GLENDON C.
Christopher
Glendon C. Turner, 84, of 314 State St., died on Tuessday, June 29, 1999, in the Herrin Hospital. Services
will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. on July 1, in the Gilbert Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gene Fox officiating.
Burial will be in the Harrison Cemetery, Buckner. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Wednesday to the funeral home.
Masonic service will be at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Turner was born in Christopher on Nov. 15, 1914, the son of Edward
and Nora (Griffith) Turner. He married Lorita M. (Bacon) Turner on Dec. 24, 1935. She survives. A retired
coal miner, he last worked at Old Ben 21. He was a member of the UMWA, the Painters Union, Masonic Lodge 1016,
Christopher. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Gwen Risch of St. Louis, and Jane Fiorenzi
of Herrin; one son, Jim Turner of Christopher; five nieces and nephews; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Hazel Coleman, Margaret Turner. Memorials may be made to the
American Lung Association or the 1st Christian Church of Herrin building fund and will be accepted at the funeral home.
TURNER, Dr. HERBERT H.
Well Known Doctor of Christopher Died Early Today
Dr. Herbert H. TURNER, a prominent physican, died at his home in Christopher, ILL.,
this morning. The funeral will be held at 2:30 tomarrow afternoon at the First Baptist
Church in Christopher, IL.
Dr. Turner graduated in medicine fifteen years ago and has been in active practice
in Franklin County since that time. He was quite active in medical society work and
was a constant attendant at the county, district and state meetings.
For the past year he has suffered from a heart lesion and it was this that caused
his death.
Several members of the profession from here will no doubt attend the funeral.
Dr. Turner was about 50 years old and is survived by his widow and two sons.
TWEEDY, BARBER
Funeral services will be today at 2 p.m. at the Union funeral Home in West
Frankfort, for Barber Tweedy, 55, of 708 Illinois Ave., West Frankfort. Burial will
be in Denning Cemetery, west of West Frankfort, with the Rev. Ray Maragni officiating.
Friends may call at the funeral home until ime for services.
Mr. Tweedy died Friday morning in Union Hospital, West Frankfort. He had suffered
a heart attack, March 22. He was a repairman at M.A.T. in Royalton and a member
of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, local 347, He was a member of the
Townmount Baptist Church, west of West Frankfort. Born April 10, 1916 to Worden,
he was the son of Harrison and Rebecca Crabtree Tweedy. He married Vivian Mosley,
Dec. 30, 1935. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Carl Leon of Marion and Billy
Bob at home; a daugher, Mrs.Buddy Ellis of Lovingon; three brothers, Nathen of Carlsbad,
N.M., Elbert and Carl of Chicago; four sisters, Mrs.Oscar Willis and Marie Tweedy,
both of West Frankfort, Mrs. Scott Arview of Alton, and Mrs, Jacob Baur of Cincinnati,
Ohio. He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

TWEEDY, BOYD
Funeral services for Boyd Tweedy, 58, formerly of West Frankfort, will be at 3 p.m.
today at the Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort. Mr. Tweedy, died Friday, July 2,
1976, at his home in Chicago. He was a World War II veteran. Survivors include
two sons, Gregory and Halph, both of Chicago; a daughter, Grace Zeimys, of Chicago;
brothers, Nathan, of Carlsbad, N.M., and Carl, of Denver; sisters, Mrs. Oscar
Willis, Mrs. Scott Arview, and Marie Tweedy, all of West Frankfort, and Mrs.
Jacob Bauer, of Cincinnati, Ohio; and two grandchildren. Friends may call at the
Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort until the hour of service. Burial will be in
Denning Cemetery.
