B. W. Lutz, agriculturist. Although not among the first
settlers, yet Balseer W. Lutz as a prominent farmer is worthy of space
in a local history. He was born in Kentucky, Aug. 25, 1819, and is the
eldest son of Daniel and Diana Lutz, who had moved to Kentucky from the
Old Dominion State. They returned again to Virginia, where B. W. grew
to manhood. April 14, 1840, he was married to Miss Eliza Ulray, who was
a daughter of John Ulray and born in Rockingham, Va., April 5, 1817.
Fourteen years later he came to Astoria, and soon purchased a portion
of his present farm. He now owns 240 acres of land rarely equaled in
this portion of Fulton. Eight children were born of the marriage, 5 of
whom are living, - Diana, the wife of Perry Farrow; John H., whose name
appears elsewhere in this book; J. B. C.; W. R., who married Miss
Maggie Swisher; Eliza J., who resides on the homestead.
