Eli Shields, deceased, was born in Fulton Co., Feb. 6th, 1837,
where he grew to manhood; on the 12th day of August, 1858, he was
united in marriage to Miss Eliza Jane Littlejohn. When the war
broke out he enlisted in Co. H, 85th Ill. Vol. Inf., and promoted
Sergeant; served gallantly during the war and gave up his life in the
cause of his country at the battle of Kenesaw Mountain. There
were 2 children born of this marriage, Edward and Wm. H.
