Obituary of George "William" William Ewing
Canton Daily Ledger, Canton, IL, July 17, 1928
St. David Man Dies Suddenly From Injuries; George W. Ewing Believed Only Slightly Hurt In Car Accident. Funeral Services On Thursday.
Injuries, supposedly of a minor nature received in an automobile accident late Sunday evening, yesterday afternoon proved fatal to George W. Ewing of St. David.  After feeling but little effect of the accident yesterday morning, Mr. Ewing became suddenly faint yesterday afternoon and died within a few minutes.
An autopsy performed this morning at the Sebree Funeral home under the direction of Coroner L. R. Chapin revealed that Ewing's death was caused by an internal injury to the abdomen.  There was no rupture and the condition was such that an operation would not have relieved it even if performed some time before death.
This afternoon a coroner's jury is considering the case at the Sebree Funeral home.  It was expected that a verdit(sic) of accidental death would be reached by the jury.
  Car Backs Off Levee
The accident in which Ewing was injured occurred about 11 o'clock Sunday evening when he accidentally backed his car off the levee at the point where the road takes the last turn into Liverpool, Ill.  Ewing apparently thought that his injuries were not serious for it was four hours before Dr. R. H. Maguire of Canton was called.
Upon examination Dr. Maguire found that his only injury was a badly bruised place on the abdomen, on the right side.  Treatment was given by the physician and yesterday morning Dr. Maguire called the family to learn how he was getting along.  He was informed that the patient was apparently getting along very well.
  Suddenly Succumbs
About 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon members of the family called Dr. Maguire, telling him that Ewing had apparently fainted.  The doctor at once went to the home and after giving the injured man treatment which seemed to revive him, he again returned to his office.  About a half four later, the doctor again received a call stating that the family believed Ewing was dying. Dr. Maguire again went to the home and found the man practically lifeless, and he died within a few minutes.
Following his death, the belief that internal injuries received in the accident were the cause of his death was expressed and it was decided to perform an autopsy this morning.
  Caught by Door
Ewing told Dr. Maguire when being treated the first time that he had attempted to get out of the car as he felt it slipping over the bank and that he succeeded in getting the door open.  Then the car lurched over the bank and he was caught in the door, one point of it catching him on the right side of the abdomen.
Mr. Ewing was born on July 4, 1886, in Missouri, the son of Sherman and Elizabeth Moose Ewing.  He had lived in St. David and Dunfermline since he was a boy and had been employed as a coal miner.
On January 4, 1911 he was married at Lewistown to Miss Nellie Thomas.
  Funeral on Thursday
Besides his wife, three children survive.  They are Clyde, 16, Cleo, 11, and Carlos, 5, all at home.  One brother, Fred Ewing lives in the west and one sister, Maude Ewing preceded him in death in May of this year.
He was prominent in organizations in St. David, being a past president and at the time of his death vice-president of Local No. 860 United Mine Workers of America.  He was also a member of the St. David K. P. lodge.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the St. David M. P. church with Rev. William Kilburne officiating.  Burial will be made in Greenwood cemetery.  The casket will be open at the home.

'Natural Causes' Inquest Verdict In Ewing Death
Inquest at Dunfermline yesterday over the body of Sherman Ewing, who dropped dead in the mine there at 1:35 o'clock that afternoon, resulted in a verdict of death from natural causes.  The inquest was held by Coroner D.   Mr. Ewing had been complaining of not feeling well, but went to work as usual yesterday and had been talking to comrades in the mine a moment or two before he suffered the fatal attack.  Death was due probably to rupture of a gastric ulcer in the stomach or an aneurism, in the opinion of the coroner.
  Born in Schuyler County

Obituary of Edwin Harris
From the Henry Republican, Henry, Illinois, June 15 and June 21, 1882

June 15 - Died at Eureka Springs, June 11, Edwin Harris, brother of George and Lucy Harris of this city (Henry).

June 21 - Edwin Harris, brother of Geo. and Miss Lucy Harris of this city, whose death at Eureka Springs, Ark., on June 13, we reported last week, was buried with marked honor at Lewiston {Lewistown}, Fulton county, on Thursday last.  The Lewiston {Lewistown} Democrat says of him: "The death of this honored, influential, public spirited citizen, in the prime of his life, and in the midst of his usefulness, constitutes the severest loss our city has experienced.  We do not know a citizen who could not as least have been as well spared.  He was the leading merchant, member of the school board, and for the past 25 years has been identified with the growth and welfare of his city and community.  A public meeting was called by the mayor of Lewiston {Lewistown} when learning of his death by telegraph, and resolutions befitting the demise of this noble man were passed.  The funeral was largely attended, and Mr Harris was generally mourned by all its citizens."  Both Geo. and Miss Lucy Harris attended the obsequies.
