Notes from Sylvia Hosler
William Riley Aaron was wounded twice, and he suffered from those wounds the rest of his life. He was born in Kentucky, but lived most of his life in Hamilton County or that area. He was married twice (maybe three times). His first wife was Elizabeth Ragsdale. She died very young. He married a second time to Daty Safford. I am descended from this couple.
Daty Safford Aaron’s story was REALLY sad. She was in and out of the mental institution in Anna, Illinois several times. That is where she died in October of 1907. I have read in information that I have received from cousins that Daty is buried in Liberty Cemetery also. There is no marker. But she was supposedly laid to rest there, and when William Riley Aaron died he was buried next to her. Guess that is possible. His grave marker may have been put there by a group honoring Civil War veterans. I have no idea. The marker is now difficult to read. His grave is right in the front area of the cemetery with no others around.
William did marry after Daty died, and lived for only a short time after that. But when this widow applied for his pension after his death she was not allowed it. She could not prove that her previous husband was dead. He probably was, but she had no proof. I am sure you don't want this information, but it was interesting to me. This woman's first husband went to St. Louis and never returned. There was a huge tornado in St. Louis at this time, so she thought he was killed. Who knows? Maybe he just took off. Anyhow, the government would not give her William's tiny pension after he died.
Here's some information about Henry Sherman Aaron. I did not locate his marker when I went to the cemetery. The dates you have are 1869 - 1919. He was born earlier than that. When the 1870 census was taken he appears as the 5 year old son of William Aaron. In the 1880 census he appears as the 15 year old son of William Aaron. So I use a birth year of about 1865. Guess when he died the person who had a marker made did not know when he was born and guessed. It is a little confusing about the number of marriages he had, so I am not sure of those facts. He indeed did have a son named Henry Chester Aaron. He went by the name Chester apparently. He is also buried there. The Illinois Statewide Death Index shows three men named Henry Aaron who all died in 1918. I am not sure which is which. The Chester Aaron buried in Liberty may have also died in 1918. I really don't have anything at all on Chester.
