Dr.
Eugene L. Hendershot

Dr.
Eugene L. Hendershot, 82, retired local
radiologist, died at 2:20 p.m. Thursday,
October 14, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical
Center.
He
graduated from Bosse High School in 1940, and
attended Evansville College for his premedical
education. He received his bachelor's degree
in 1943 and his medical degree in 1946 from
Indiana Univeristy. His medical internship was
completed at Methodist Hospital in
Indianapolis. He became a board-certified
radiologist in 1953. He was a veteran of World
War II, serving as a captain in the medical
corps in the occupational army of the U.S. in
Japan.
He was
a radiologist at Welborn Hospital and Welborn
Clinic for 37 years. He was the consulting
radiologist for Alcoa Warrick Works, Alcoa
Fluorspar Mining Operation in Hardin County,
Illinois, the Evansville State Hospital,
Gibson County General Hospital, Henderson
Community Methodist Hospital, Huntingburg
Hospital and the Veterans Administration
Outpatient Clinic in Evansville.
He was
recognized as a Fellow of the American College
of Radiology in 1960. He organized the first
school of radiation technology in the
community in 1962. He was appointed to the
Indiana State Commission of Radiation Safety
by Governor Robert Orr and was awarded the
Sagamore of Wabash for his service in 1990.
He was
a founding member of Rolling Hills Country
Club and served on the initial board of
directors. He served as a past president of
the Plaza Park Booster Club. He was active in
Little League baseball and the Cub Scouts. He
was an organizer for the Evansville College
Aces Tip Off Club.
He
served on the Welborn Hospital Foundation for
over twenty-five years. He was past president
of the professional staff at Welborn Hospital.
He served as a delegate to the Indiana State
Medical Association for twelve years and
received the certificate of distinction for
fifty years in the practice of medicine from
the association in 1996. He was a member of
the Methodist Temple.
He
enjoyed bowling, fishing, playing poker,
sports and world travel.
He is
survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha
Nadine (Hitchcock) Hendershot; three
daughters, Ellen Hendershot of Evansville,
Sharon Hendershot of Evansville and Shirley
Klaus of Mount Carmel, Ill.; two sons, Rodger
Hendershot of Indianapolis, Ind., and Keith
Hendershot of Georgetown, Ind.; sister, Helen
Wells of Evansville; and seven grandchildren,
Daryn, Lauren, Wesley, Laura and Stephen, and
Dustan and Isaac Klaus.
Funeral
services will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday,
October 16, 2004, at Boone Funeral Home, East
Chapel, 5330 Washington Avenue, with Pastor
Pat Jackson officiating. Burial will be in
Park Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral Home, East Chapel.
