PORT
BYRON, Ill. - Larry E. McCarthy, 71, of Port
Byron, Ill., died Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, at
home. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Peace
Lutheran Church, Port Byron. Burial will be in
Frieden's Cemetery, Port Byron. Visitation
will be on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the
Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Memorials may
be made to Peace Lutheran Church, the Port
Byron Volunteer Fire Department or the East
Moline Police Benevolent Association.
Larry
Edmond McCarthy was born February 17, 1936, in
Elizabethtown, Illinois, the son of Herbert
and Ersa Holbrook McCarthy. He married Stormy
Gober on April 23, 1961, in Port Byron. He had
served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1955 to
1959. He was a police officer for the city of
East Moline, retiring in 1975. He had also
been employed by DeCap Trucking and the
Illinois Department of Corrections. Larry was
a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Coe Lamb
American Legion, Port Byron, East Moline
AMVETS and the Illinois Police Association. He
was a very generous and caring man with his
family and many friends. He enjoyed sharing
his woodworking projects with everyone. He
enjoyed scroll saw woodworking, fishing,
NASCAR and crossword puzzles.
Survivors
include his wife of 46 years, Stormy; a
sister-in-law, Ila Gober, Hillsdale; cousins,
Bunny Brooks, Grand Blanc, Mich., Roxanne and
Gary Hulsbrink, Grand Blanc, Mich., and Brooke
Hulsbrink, Sarasota, Fla.; and special family
friends, Brandon Wainwright and Amy Senh and
their children, Khylie and Dean, all of
Silvis, and Chris and Mandi Stout, Moline. He
was preceded in death by his parents and a
brother-in-law, Lex Gober.
