James
R. Turner
James R.
Turner was born on July 19, 1938 in a little farm
house near the Iron Furnace. He was the first
son of Everett and Loretta (Yarber) Turner. Some
of his favorite pastimes as a boy were hunting ginseng
and golden seal root. After his two brothers
George and Eugene were old enough they spent most of
their summers playing baseball. By the time they
were in their mid-teens every team around wanted the
Turner Boys. George was so tall, a ball never
got past him at first base. Eugene could hit the
ball a mile and Jimmy's curve ball would run you off
home plate.
Jimmy was
married to Dorothy M. Jackson on May 6, 1960.
They were blessed with two fine children; Paul Wayne
and his wife Debra who with their children Krystyn and
Garrett live in Rosiclare; and Ruth Ann and her
husband Bobby Boyd who with their daughter Peyton live
in rural Elizabethtown; also, grandson Broc who
blessed Jimmy with two great-grandchildren Bohdi and
Aida.
Jimmy found
work as a truck driver for M. L. Conn & Sons and
hauled ore to Ozark-Mahoning Mill for 22 years.
He then worked at the fill for 11 years.
Retiring in 1993 for health reasons, he filled the
rest of his life continuing to search for ginseng, and
instead of playing baseball he became a staunch
supporter for the St. Louis Cardinals. But his
favorite time was when the grandkids came to visit.
Jimmy was also
blessed with two sisters; Helen Cubley who lives in
Rosiclare and his baby sister Thelma and her husband
Charles Cruson who live in rural Golconda; and a host
of nieces and nephews. Also, his Aunt Julie
Smartz blessed Jimmy's life.
Jimmy had a
deep abiding faith in God and was baptized into the
Body of Christ in the First Apostolic Church in
Rosiclare. He had a very gentle nature and will
be deeply missed by all who were honored to know him.
