Howard Cemetery

The Howard Cemetery is located in DeSoto Township, Jackson County, IL. This cemetery was
established on the farm of Abraham Howard in 1883 with the burial of his grandson Thomas
A. Howard.
The cemetery is rather isolated and nearly surrounded by the coal mines. To reach it we
traveled from the town of DeSoto on Route 149 into the town of Hurst where 149 is called
Russell Street. We made a left turn onto Bush Street and continued on it until it came to
an end at a gravel road. This gravel road is named Howard Cemetery Road. Making another
left turn travel the gravel road, which runs alongside the railroad tracks, for a mile and
a half when it crosses a wooden bridge over the tracks and is at the entrance to the
cemetery. I did this reading on Monday, May 29,2000 with the help of my husband
Richard. Many of the markers are very old and quite a few are broken.
