This is the Civil War record of Samuel Thomas
Glenn, son of Elias Glenn and Mary Ann Fleming,
born about 1841 in Perry Co Mo. Living in
Jackson County IL with Uncle Manning Glenn in
1860 census. Married Lucinda Smith in Jackson
County IL.
Samuel Thomas Glenn had fair hair and gray
eyes and was 5 foot 9 inches and 20 years old
when he volunteered for service.
He is buried in Section 2 Grave # Little Rock
National Cemetery Arkansas
Sterling and Nancy Smith were Lucinda Smith
Glenn Blake’s parents.
Peter Jackson Smith and Thomas Smith were her
brothers.
Delitha Glenn was Mrs. Manning Glenn,
Lucinda’s sister.
Manning Glenn was Samuel Thomas Glenn’s
uncle.

On this twenty-sixth day of May 1865
personally appeared before me, Hugh Crawford the
clerk of the County Court in and for the County
and State above named, (1) Lucinda Glenn who
after being duly sworn according to law declares
and says that she is aged twenty-six years, that
she is a resident of Killian Precinct, County of
Jackson, State of Illinois, and that she is the
widow of (2) Samuel T. Glenn who was a (3)
Private in Company (4) C commanded by Captain
Hezekiah C. Hodge of the 18th Regiment of
Illinois Volunteers, commanded by Colonel
Michael Lawler, in the war with the so-called
Confederate States, and that she has not in any
way been engaged in, or aided or abetted the
existing rebellion in the United states, and
that her said husband enlisted at Jackson County
Illinois on or about the sixteenth day of August
A. D. 1862 for the term of three years and
continued in actual service in said war for the
term of___________and died at Little Rock State
of Arkansas on or about the fourth day of may
1865 and the cause of his death is as yet
unknown to this declarant. Received while in the
service of the United States.
That she was married to the said (2) Samuel
T. Glenn on the Twenty-second day of October
1861 at Jackson County Illinois by one James
McBride a Justice of the peace that her husband,
the aforesaid Samuel T. Glenn died on the day
above mentioned; that her name before her said
marriage was Lucinda smith and that she has
remained a widow since the death of her said
husband as will more fully appear by reference
to the proof hereunto annexed. And she further
states that she believes there is a public
record of her said marriage and no private
record of said marriage (5) That her Post office
address is Murphysboro, Jackson County Illinois
She further states that, at his death, her
said husband left surviving him only the
following named child who was then under the age
of sixteen years, that said child resides at
Jackson County Illinois with its mother the
declarant and at the date of this declaration
was of the age herein stated, viz: Thomas
Manning Glenn was born on the twenty-ninth (29)
day of June A. D. 1864 and is not quite one year
old.
She makes this declaration for the purpose of
obtaining the Pension to which she is entitled
by reason of the services and death of her said
husband, under the Act of Congress, approved
July 14th, 1862. And she hereby constitutes and
appoints Urbane E. Robinson Jr.. of Murphysboro,
Ills. Her attorney, to prosecute the claim, and
procure a certificate.

On the 26th day of May 1865 before me the
County Clerk on and for said county, personally
came Peter Jackson Smith and Starling Smith
residents of Killian Precinct in the County of
Jackson State aforesaid, who being duly sworn
according to law, declare that they are
personally acquainted with Mrs.. (1) Lucinda
Glenn widow of (2) Samuel T. Glenn, say that
they were present and saw her make her mark to
the foregoing declaration, and were acquainted
with her and her said husband before her entered
the service, and know that they lived together
as man and wife, and were so reputed. That she
is the widow of the identical (2) Samuel T.
Glenn who performed the military service
mentioned in the said declaration, and has
remained a widow since his death. That their
knowledge of the identity of her husband with
the soldier is derived from (7) an intimate
personal acquaintance of over ten years before
he entered said service and saw him while in
said service [___] died on the Fourth day of may
A. D. 1865 while in the line of duty and from
their acquaintance with her know that she is the
identical person she represents herself to be.
And they further testify that they reside as
above stated and have no interest in the
prosecution of this claim.

Officer’s Certificate to Death of Soldier
Samuel T. Glenn
Co. A 18th Reg’t
Illinois Infty Vols.
I H. C. Hodges do hereby certify that I was
Captain of Co. C of the Eighteenth Regiment of
Illinois Infry Volunteers, and am acquainted
with Samuel T. Glenn who was a member of my
company. That the said Samuel T. Glenn was
mustered into service on or about the ninth day
of September 1862 and died on or about the
fourth day of May 1865, while in the service of
the United States and in the line of duty as a
soldier, in the manner and at the place as
follows: He died at Little Rock Arkansas on or
about the fourth day of May A. D. 1865. Cause of
death was Billious Fever. He was taken sick
while doing duty as a soldier at Little Rock
Ark.
That the said soldier was in good health at
the time he entered the service, and the cause
of his death was billious fever.

by Asst Surgeon R. M. Lacky as having died May
5, 1865 at Genl Hosp. Little Rock Ark. Of Chron
Diarrhoea.

Widow’s Declaration for Increase of Pension
Act of July 1866
State of Illinois
Jackson County
On this 20th day of November 1866 before me
John F. Cover a Clerk of the County Court in and
for the county and state above named personally
appeared Mrs. Lucinda Glenn aged 27 years, who
being duly sworn according to law declares that
her Post Office address is Ava in the county of
Jackson and state of Illinois that she is the
widow of Samuel T. Glenn formerly in the service
of the United States as a private in Co. C in
the 18th Regiment of Illinois Infty Vols and
that by reason of the service and death of her
said husband she is a pensioner of the United
States on the roll of the Centralia agency at
$8.00 per month as will appear by her pension
certificate herewith presented.
She further states that she has now the
following named children under the age of
sixteen years; the said children being also the
children of her late husband named above and are
of the ages respectively named Thomas M. Glenn
who was born June 29th 1866
She makes this declaration for the purpose of
obtaining the increased pension to which she is
entitled under the provisions of the Act
approved July 1866 and hereby constitutes and
appoints U. E. Robinson Jr. her attorney to
prosecute her claim and procure her pension
certificates and revokes and countermands all
former authority that may have been given for
the above specified purpose.

Sworn to subscribed and acknowledged before
me and also personally appeared Sterling Smith a
resident of Jackson Co IL and Nancy Smith a
resident of Jackson County IL persons whom I
certify to be respectable and entitled to credit
who being duly sworn according to law declare
that they are personally acquainted with Mrs.
Lucinda Glenn widow of Samuel T. Glenn who has
made the foregoing declaration and know that she
is the identical person she represents herself
to be and that she is in receipt of a pension as
stated in said declaration and that her
statement of the names and ages of her child is
derived from intimate personal acquaintance all
her life and present at birth of the child.
And they further testify that they are not
interested in this claim nor engaged in its
prosecution.

February A. D. 1868 personally appeared
Jackson County Delitha Glenn and Thomas Smith
who being first duly sworn according to law
deposes and says that they were personally
acquainted with Samuel T. Glenn late Private in
Company C of the 18th Regiment of Illinois
Infantry Volunteers and knew him for the last
ten years previous to his death and know that he
died leaving his widow Lucinda Glenn and Thomas
M. Glenn his only son and that the said Lucinda
Glenn still remains unmarried since the death of
her husband the said Samuel T. Glenn and still
retains possession of her said child, Thomas M.
Glenn and has continued to support it ever since
the death of her said husband Samuel T. Glenn
and that the said Thomas M. Glenn was born on
the 29th day of June A. D. 1864 and we were
present at the birth of said child and further
depon[____] saith not, except that they have no
interest in the prosecution of this claim for
pension.

I, James W. Hall clerk of the County Court of
said County, hereby certify that Mr. William
Blake was married to Mrs. Lucinda Glenn in said
County on the 11th day of July A. D. 1872 by
William Bradley a Minister of the Gospel duly
authorized to solemnize marriages by the statue
of the State of Illinois, as appears by his
return and certificate of marriage attached to
the license granted therefor by the Clerk of
this court, and now on file in my office.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed
by name and attached the seal of said County

Personally appeared before me the Clerk of
the County Court, a duly authorized Court of
[___] within and for the county and state
aforesaid; Lucinda Blake, who upon her oath
declares that she was the Widow of Samuel T.
Glenn now deceased. Late a Private in Company C
Eighteenth Regiment of Illinois Infantry
Volunteers in the War of 1861. That as such
widow she was entitled to and drew a pension of
$8.00 per month together with $2.00 additional
on account of Thomas M. Glenn only child of said
Samuel T. Glenn; that her pension Certificate
No. 83.505 bearing date on the Twenty fourth day
of February A. D. 1868. Signed W. T. Otto Acting
Secretary of the Interior, and Countersigned by
Joseph H. Barrett Commissioner of pensions, is
herewith returned;
She further states that she remained the
widow of the said Samuel T. Glenn until the
eleventh day of July A. D. 1872 when she was
united in marriage to one William Blake, as will
appear by Certificate of the Clerk of the County
Court herewith sent.
She further states that by order of the
Probate Court of the said county she was on the
Twenty first day of September A. d. 1872 duly
appointed Guardian for said Thomas Glenn minor
heir of her late husband said Samuel T. Glenn
deceased, as will more fully appear by the
certified copy of her letter of guardianship,
herewith also sent. She further states that said
Thomas Glenn minor heir a aforesaid is still
living and that she has the care and custody of
him and that she is the only legally appointed
guardian for said child. She makes this
application for the purpose of obtaining the
pension due and to acc___, on behalf of the said
Thomas Glenn, minor heir as aforesaid. That she
hereby appoints George W. Smith of Murphysboro,
Jackson County Illinois her true and lawful
Attorney to prosecute her claim; that her
residence is in Jackson County Illinois; and her
post office address is Ava, Jackson County,
Illinois.

of said claimant and their acquaintance with her
that she is the identical person she represents
herself to be and that they have no interest in
the prosecution of this claim.

Samuel T. Glenn left no child by any former
wife. And further that said Samuel T. Glenn was
never married but the one time. And that said
Samuel T. Glenn left no other child. Other than
Thomas Glenn. Word of this deponent

hereby certify that Lucinda Blake whose name

contents and effect of said affidavit and that I
have no interest either direct or indirect in
the prosecution of this claim.

James Henson being first duly sworn according
to law on his oath states that he was personally
and intimately acquainted with Samuel T. Glenn
deceased=late a private in Company C Eighteenth
Regiment Ills Inft Vol War of 1861=that he had
been personally and intimately acquainted with
him from the time he was a child up to his death
and of his own personal knowledge he knows that
said Samuel T. Glenn was never married but to
one time=which was to Lucinda Glenn=And further
of his own personal knowledge he knows that said
Samuel T. Glenn left no other child under
Sixteen years of age surviving him other than
Thomas Glenn. And that he has no interest
whatever either direct or indirect in the
prosecution of this claim.

certify that James Henson whose name appears to
the foregoing affidavit is personally known to

of said affidavit and that I am not interested
directly or indirectly in the prosecution of
this claim.
