Rebecca Nee Hand Shannon

MRS. REBECCA SHANNON LEFT FIFTY GRAND CHILDREN, 75 GREAT GRAND CHILDREN, SHE LIVED NEAR ORA.

Mrs. Rebecca Shannon, aged 94 years, died Friday morning at 4a.m. at the home of her daughter in law, Mrs. Ann Shannon, widow of the late Scott Shannon, near Oraville.

Mrs. Shannon had made her home until recentlly with her daughter, Mrs. Eliza Williamson, west of this city, and had gone to the home of Mrs. Shannon for a visit. Her health had been failing her for some time although she had remarkably good health for one so old.

Mrs. Shannon was born on what is now known as the old Oss Graeff farm about five miles west of this city, January 8, 1821, and was 94 years, 1 month and 27 days of age at the time of her death.

She was raised in Old Brownsville, the first county seat of Jackson county and grew up there.

Her maiden name was Rebecca Hand. She was married early in life to Abraham Crossin and to this union two children were born, Silas Crossin and Mary F. Crossin, both of whom preceeded their mother to the grave although they lived to be of ripe age.

She was then married to Samuel Shannon to whom the following children were born. Mrs. Amanda Akin, Curtain, Okla., Harvey Shannon, Beebe, Ark., Mrs. Dave Thompson, living near Ava, Mrs. Ellen Thompson of Bloomington, Mrs. Jake Williamson, west of this city, Mrs. Viola Stout living near Ava, Chas. Shannon of East St. Louis, and Scott Shannon, deceased.

Mrs. Shannon lived to see Jackson county grow from a wilderness to a populous and prosperous county, and was permitted to spend her entire life within its borders. From the hand sickle to the self binder, and from the ox cart to the automobile her ninety four years of life has seen the greatest development in the arts and sciences and invention in the history of the world. She was dearly beloved by scores of friends all over Jackson county and is mourned by many scores of relatives.

She was blessed with more than fifty grandchildlren and lived to greet over seventy five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Sat. 1p.m.  at Camp Creek
