"This simple wooden church housed a number of Mt. Vernon congregations in a period of 71 years. In 1840, while it was being used as the Jefferon county courthouse, Abraham Lincoln was denied use of the building for a political speech. The church-courthouse is shown as it appeared in 1890 when it was the Episcopalian church. The Episcopal congregation bought the building in 1880 and used it until 1909 as a place of worship."
