Jim Sweet Former minister, longtime teacher
Jim Sweet, a former minister and educator, died Tuesday (Aug. 21, 2007) after a long illness at Belleville Memorial Hospital. He was 78 and lived in Coulterville, Ill. Mr. Sweet grew up in Coulterville and graduated from high school there. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in the early 1950s. Mr. Sweet married Audrey Smith of Mount Vernon, Ill., in 1948. She died in 1994. For almost 20 years, Mr. Sweet served as a Methodist minister. He attended several colleges, including McKendree College in Lebanon, to obtain his pastoral training. During the late 1940s, Mr. Sweet preached in Jefferson and Macoupin counties in Illinois. Mr. Sweet then turned to teaching. He taught for more than 20 years in Alton and with the St. Louis Public Schools. He retired in 1992. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Church of Christ, 1400 Troy Road, Troy, Ill. A private burial will follow at Coulterville Cemetery. Among the survivors are four sons, Bill Sweet of Coulterville, John Sweet of Maryville, and Bjorn Loftis and Gus Loftis, both of St. Louis; four daughters, Donna Neil of Cocolalla, Idaho, Lily Hoskin of Coulterville, Teresa Orto of Manassas, Va., and Jana Loftis of St. Louis; a sister, Marie Lehr of Coulterville; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
