When we went back and forth to the old school at the top of the hill, both morning and night, I found an "efficient" way to get back down to our house. The stairs are divided into units of about a dozen steps with landings between. I would get up on the metal railing, sidesaddle, and slide down a flight of stairs. My momentum would impel me across the landing and on down the next flight of steps. So, from top to bottom, I would not touch my feet on anything solid till I got to the bottom. As you can see in the picture, there is quite a clift to worry about. (Who, ME worry?!) And of course at the end of the day, I would also be carrying an armful of books! Now, I wonder if, over the years, any other young folks did that same rather foolish thing??

Photo from Bob Bergman ( BergmanRC@comcast.net ) Unfortunately, we not have a date for this photo. However, the firemen (with the beard) standing behind the kneeling boy (left) is Henry Frederick Bergmann (1846-1914). Henry’s parents were Frederick Ernst Bergmann & Margaret Ann Hines. If anyone has any information on any of the other men in the photo .. please let us know. |
