A letter to the editors of the American from a correspondent at Galena , the seat of the U.S. Lead mines in Illinois , states that laborers are very scarce in the mines. The town contains a population of five to seven thousand inhabitants and accessions are daily making; yet the writer states that 500 men would readily find employment at the rate of $17 to $25 per month and board also found. – Balt. John DOWLING, a wealthy and prominent citizen of Galena, died at St. Louis, a few days ago, where he had gone for medical treatment.

Rev. David CLARK, D.D., of Sandwich, formerly of Dallas, Tex., has formally accepted a call to the First Presbyterian Church in Galena, and will enter upon his pastorate the second week in August.

Mr. Jacob KIGHTLINGER, an old gentleman well known in the northwestern part of the State, committed suicide a few days ago by shooting himself through the temple at the house of his son. The father and son had gotten into a dispute over some land, when the old man deliberately took his own life.

Mrs. Casper Shatz, of Galena, was recently scratched lightly on the arm by a cat with which she was playing at the time. Subsequently the arm commenced to swell and to pain her severly. Blood poisoning and erysipelas set in and the lady’s condition at last accounts was thought to be very critical.

Alfred Childs was honored Thursday night on his 86th birthday by a dinner at the home of his daughter Mrs. Phillipa Swing. Among the guests were three friends and neighbors of Mr. Childs. J.P. Vincent, Albert Bastian and Edward Jeffery.

Rock City IL - Mr. and Mrs. Schlueter of Rock City, announce the marriage of their daughter, Eleanor, to Jay Bouton, of ROckford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Judd Bouton of Pecatonica, which was solmenized Saturday June 10, 1939 at Dubuque Iowa. The bride wore a navy blue chiffon dress with pink accessories. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Plant were the atendants. Mrs. Blank wearing a dres sof robin's egg blue crepe with white accessories. Afer a wedding trip through the south, Mr. and Mrs. Bouton will make their home in Rockford, where the groom is an employee of the Barber-Coleman Company.
