ELLENOR M. (WINSLOR) BAHR
, 92, of Scales Mound, died at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2008, at Provena St. Joseph Center, Freeport.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, at Zion Presbyterian Church, Schapville, with the Rev. Doug Hall officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, Scales Mound and after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
She was born on Dec. 8, 1915, in Gratiot, Wis., daughter of Eli and Blanche (Copeland) Winslow. She married Clarence C. Bahr on June 11, 1934 in Gratiot; he preceded her in death on May 6, 1982.
Ellenor was a member of the Zion Presbyterian Church, Schapville and its Ladies Aid Society. She previously taught Sunday School and enjoyed quilting.
Surviving are a son, Roger L. (Judy) Bahr, of Freeport; and a stepgranddaughter, Cindy McIlvanie, of Shannon. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Larry F. Bahr, on May 29, 1991; a daughter-in-law, Gloria Jean Bahr; two sisters, Zelpha Folgate and Esther Key; and five brothers, Leslie, Elmer, Clare, Norman and Glen Winslow.
OSCAR BAIER
, a resident of this vicinity for 59 years, passed away at a Freeport hospital Thursday evening, after a long illness and hospitalization. He was born in Germany May 26, 1871, to Casper and margaret Baier coming to Woodbine township at the age of 15 years. He was unmarried and farmed and followed the trade of a stone mason. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. John Weyhkandt, of Davenport, Ia.; two brothers, Albert, residing in Austin, Texas, and Rudy of Stockton. Two brothers preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Vanderheyden funeral home, Rev. Mr. Magel, pastor of Stockton Lutheran church, officiating. Interment will be made in the Townsend cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
MARGARET (BARNINGHAM) BARRETT
, the daughter of James and Catherine Barningham, was born June 9, 1855, in Thompson township. She was united in marriage to Enoch Barrett, March 24, 1895 by Rev. G. A. Griswold. To this union was born one son, James.
The first year of their married life was spent on the Hathaway farm in Rush township, then they moved on the farm, where she resided up to the time of her death.
Years ago she joined the Salem M. E. church and later her membership was transferred to Apple River charge. Mrs. Barrett was not of a public nature but unassuming, her home was her domain.
When her health began to fail and she saw the end was drawing near, she expressed her submissiveness to God's will and willingness and readiness to meet her loved ones gone on before. During her last illness she would join with her friends in singing songs of her Savior whom she said she loved, and Heaven which she looked forward to entering soon.
To mourn her departure she leaves a husband, son and three sisters, Mrs. Hannah Wright of Scales Mound; Mrs. Wm. Stauss of Galena, Ill.; and Mrs. Mannie Malone, of North Platte, Nebr.
She peacefully fell asleep at 9:30 Friday evening, Nov. 25, 1927. Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church, Monday morning, Rev. R. L. Hoover officiating. Singers were Mrs. Robert Beall, and Mrs. Leo Charlton. Casket bearers were, Messrs Charlton, McFadden, W. J. White, Edward Gerber. Alex Hume, John Rowe, and Elmer Williams. Burial was made in Scales Mound Cemetery.
ORVILLE LESTER BAUSMAN
, 83, died Wednesday, March 20, 1991 in KSB Hospital, Dixon. He was self-employed in general maintenance efore retiring. He was born Sept. 27, 1907 in Apple River to Nicholas and Anna (Plath) Bausman. He was preceded in death by one son; four brothers and one sister. Survivors include his sons, Delvin of Oregon, Gerald of Elizabeth, Kenneth of Lanark and Marvin of Thompson; sisters, Mrs. Roberta Campbell of Sumner, Wash., and Mrs. Eula Mae Cleary of Yerington, Nev.; 23 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren. Private graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Friday in Ladies Union Cemeetery in Stockton. Arrangements were completed by Hermann Funeral Home, Stockton.
THELMA BLANCHE (WEST) BAUSMAN
28, wife of Orville L. Bausman, of Lanark, former Stockton residents, passed away about 5:30 o’clock Sunday morning in a Freeport hospital. Mrs. Bausman, formerly Miss Thelma Blanche West, was born in Rush Township, Jo Daviess County, August 22, 1910, the daughter of Eddie and Minnie West. Her marriage to Orville L. Bausman took place May 28, 1927. She leaves her husband, five children: Kenneth, Marvin, Gerald, Melvin, and Carson Bausman, at home, her parents, and the following brothers and sisters, Howard, Walker, Murrel, and Carson West, Mrs. Mae Vincent, Mrs. Lois Parkinson and Miss Evelyn West, all of Stockton.
Funeral services will be held from the Vanderheyden Funeral Home in Stockton at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Rev. C. B. Holloway will officiate and burial will be in Ladies Union Cemetery.
HENRY FREDERICK BERGMANN
- died at his home about nine o'clock last evening after being sick but a few hours. He was about the streets yesterday seemingly in his usual state of health. Shortly after supper he was taken with an attack of heart trouble.
Mr. Bergman was about seventy years of age and is survived by a wife and family.
The decedent was a carpenter by trade and was probably the oldest active fireman in Galena. He was a member of Liberty Hook and Ladder Fire Company for many years and at different times held all the offices of the organization.
A funeral announcement and more extended notice of his demise will appear later.
HENRY BERGMANN
- Many years of illness preceded the death of Henry Louis Bergmann, 82, Tuesday afternoon about 4:15 o'clock at the residence, 770 Lowell Street. Mr. Bergmann was born June 13, 1850 in Germany. He came to this country in 1886 (note: this can't be the correct date - has to be prior to 1873 at least - when he married Julia Baumann in Jo Daviess Co., IL), settling in Chicago where he was engaged in the sash and door business until the Chicago fire. His shop was burned out at that time and he moved to Galena for a short time, coming later to Dubuque where he has been ever since. He continued in the carpentry business and was employed at the Dubuque Altar Manufacturing company prior to his illness. Mr. Bergmann was the last Dubuque resident of the old Volunteer Fire department. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran church. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Frank Bohn, Mrs. A. Lehnhardt and Mrs. Charles Avery, all of this city; and three sons, Henry of Chicago, Conrad and Herman, Dubuque. Mr. Bergmann's wife preceded him in death three weeks ago and a son George was accidentally killed in Canada, Nov 13 1931. The body is at the home of Mrs. A. Lehnhardt, Mr Bergmann's daughter, at 2290 Lowell Street, from where the funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock followed by a service at St. John's Lutheran church at 3:30 o'clock. Burial will be made in St. John's cemetery.
MRS. JESSE W. BIRD
, aged 74 years, died very suddenly last Saturday afternoon about three o'clock. Mrs. Bird had appeared as well as usual during the day and had performed her household work in the customary manner. After dinner when her son James left the house she appeared well and cheerful. Shortly before three o'clock her granddaughter, Miss Belle Thomas, went to the house and found her grandmother lying prostrate on her face partly inside the door of the cellar kitchen, She ran out on the street and called her uncle, James, who at once went to the house. His mother was still breathing and he picked her up and place her on a lounge She looked at him and made an effort to speak but could not. Dr. Hilliard was at once called, but on his arrival he found she was dead. For years Mrs. Bird has been subject to fainting spells and it is thought her death was the result of one of these spells. It is certain she had no premonition from the fact that she was found lying partly within the door, and upon her face. Her sleeves were rolled up just as she had been about her work, and her bread was found in the pan, made up and ready for baking. Mrs. Bird was born in Mercer county, Penn. , Dec. 12, 1818. She had lived in Warren since 1861, when she came here with her husband and family. She was the mother of ten children, five sons and five daughters survive her. When a young woman she experienced religion and joined the M. E. church, which relation she continued until the time of her death. She was an earnest, honest, hardworking christian woman and mother. The funeral occurred Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. from the late home of the deceased, Rev. Wilkinson officiating, and was largely attended by our citizens who knew and respected the deceased. The remains were interred in Elmwood cemetery.
MARY EMMA (RICHARDS) BIRD
, was born January 31st, 1867 in Veta Grande, IL. She was the daughter of John and Mary Richards. She married Simon E. Bird November17th, 1886 and had twoo daughter and two sons. About 1903 they moved to Scales Mound, IL. There children attended the funeral, all of whom are: Mrs. Emma Schumaker, Guilford Township; Willis of Dubuque, IA; Mrs. Rose Schalk of Chicago, Il and Leslie of East Orange, New Jersey. There are two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Carr Of Council Hill, IL and Mrs. Annie Cam of Council Bluff and a brother John T. Richards of Council Bluff, IL.
JOHN H. BONJOUR
, farmer in this area all his life, died Thursday evening, June 23, 1960 in a Freeport hospital. He was born August 1, 1888 in Rush Township, Jo Daviess County, the son of Thomas and Fannie (Neeham) Bonjour. He married Mary Kuhse January 29, 1913.
Surviving are his wife; five sons, Wilbur, Elmer, and Alvin, all of Warren, Orville of Woodbine, and John Jr. of Winslow; two daughters, Mrs. Henry Albright of Woodbine and Mrs. Raymond Korth of Stockton; five brothers, Frank and Richard, both of Warren, Garfield and James, both of Apple River, and Paul of Savanna; and one sister, Mrs. Lydia Yungbluth of Stockton.
Service tentatively will be Sunday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the Rev. Oswald Mall officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
ELIZABETH A. BRANSTETTER
, 90, of East Dubuque, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. John Bonnet, of near East Dubuque Tuesday morning at 10:15 o'clock. Death followed a prolonged illness.
She was born at Newton Stewart, County Tyronne [sic], Ireland, on Feb. 14, 1847. She had been a resident of East Dubuque the past 68 years and was the widow of the late Jackson Branstetter, who was justice of the peace in East Dubuque.
Her survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Feyen of Dubuque, Mrs. Myrtle La Fontaine of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Maude Schaefer of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Mrs. Gertrude Bonnet of East Dubuque; one brother, Thomas Alexander of Shullsburg, Wis.; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. One son, two daughters, and her husband, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Branstetter was a member of the Wesley Methodist Church in East Dubuque and was affiliated with the Ladies Aid Society.
The body will be at the residence Wednesday noon. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
DIANE IRENE(COTTRAL) BRUGGEN
, 54, of 705 Monroe St., Hanover, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 25, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hanover. After cremation rites, a prayer service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 27, at the church, followed by burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover. Friends may call from 4:30 to 8 p.m. today at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover, where the rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.
She was born on April 25, 1955, in Savanna, daughter of Robert Daniel and Patricia (Ballein) Cottral. She graduated from Hanover High School, class of 1973.
Diane met her future husband, Jeff Brueggen, in 1982. They were married on May 31, 1986, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
Diane worked several years as a reservationist at Eagle Ridge Resort. She also worked at Chestnut Mountain Resort and Rausch Realty, of Stockton.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, where she taught Catechism and believed strongly in the mystery of holy communion.
Diane's joy and strength came from her husband, family, friends and her faith. She was an accomplished homemaker and had a passion for music, cooking, gardening and socializing, "Sit Long, Talk Much, Laugh Often."
Diane showed great courage in her battle with cancer. Diane will be dearly missed by her husband, Jeff Brueggen, of Hanover; her mother, Patricia "Pat" Cottral, of Hanover; two sisters, Sheila (Dwayne) Allison, of Hanover, and Amy (Bill) Butzow, of Lincolnwood; two brothers, John (Kelly Behrens) Cottral and Jim Cottral, both of Hanover; her father and mother-in-law, Albert and Marian Brueggen; a sister in-law, Jane Brussman; two brothers-in-law, Pat (Darienne) Brueggen and Bill Brueggen; eight nieces, Eileen, Cecilia, Marikate, Maggie, Maria, Christina, Amanda and Megan; six nephews, Colin, Tony, Joe, Jack, Daniel and Alex; and a great-nephew, Christian.
She was preceded in death by her father, Danny Cottral; her sister, Dr. Julie (Cottral) Cerniglia; and a brother at birth, Christopher.
MARIAN M. (KRISE) BRUBAKER
, age 92, of rural Mount Carroll, died November 17, 2009, at the Morgan Memorial Home in Stockton, Il. where she had been a resident for about two months. A daughter, of Ray and and Lena (Trost) Krise, Marian was born on September 1, 1917, in Lyons, Ia. Later, they moved to rural Stockton. She attended Fitzsimmons School. On September 15, 1937, Marian married Elwyn Brubaker in Dubuque, Ia. To that union, five children were born. They moved to a farm in rural Loran and Berreman Townships where Marion lived approximately sixty-five years. They farmed the land and in later years Marion went to work at Newell Manufacturing in Freeport, Il. for over twenty-five years. Elwyn passed away in 1975, leaving Marian alone at the farm for over thirty-five years, learning to be independent. She loved the simple life and did not care for anthing new or modern. She was a true "pioneer woman". She loved the outdoors and all the work that went with it. She was a member of Kent Methodist Church and Order of the Eastern Star. In later years, she loved her car, driving herself to town, the doctor, getting groceries and mowing her lawn, which she still did in her 80's and 90's.
Surviving are her daughter Donna (Jim) Green of Fulton, Il; her daughter Kathy (Lonnie) Fox of Albany, Il; son, Ed Brubaker of Christiana, Tn; and son, Ray (Lori) Brubaker of Yuma, Az; five grandchildren, Christine (Brian) Williams of Kent, Il, Jim Toepfer of Davenport, Ia; Laurie Toepfer of Clinton, Ia; Rick (Rome) Brubaker of Pearl City, Il and Bec (Bob) Potter of Pearl City, Il; one stepgranchild, James Eversoll of Kent, Il; nine great grandchildren; one step great grandchild and three great great grandchildren.
Preceding Marian in death were her parents; her husband, Elwyn; her son, Wayne; and one sister, Helen Larsen. Vistation will be held on Thursday, November 19, 2009 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Herman Funeral Home. The service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 20, 2009, at the Herman Funeral Home with burial in the Morseville Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.
GENEVRA (ATKINS) BUNDY
, 92, of Richland Center, Wis., formerly of Hanover, Ill., died Thursday, March 26, 2009 at Schmitt Woodland Hills, in Richland Center.
She was born in Hanover on May 7, 1916, the daughter of John and Anna (Whalen) Atkins. Genevra attended Hanover schools. She was united in marriage with Harvey Peschang on Dec. 27, 1934, and they were blessed with one son, Cecil Clair, and daughters, Alyce Ann and Debborah, before he preceded her in death. She married Carlos Bundy on Oct. 22, 1960 in Mount Carroll, Ill.They were owners of Bundy's Repair Shop in that city for eight years, and then operated the business in Lone Rock, Wis. for 15 years, prior to Carlos' death. Genevra worked as a Lab Tech at the Richland Foundry for fourteen years, and then worked at Pine Valley Manor for three and one half years. In addition to working outside the home, she opened her home to seven Central American students who were attending the University of Wisconsin-Richland. She enjoyed and loved the students. All of her life she volunteered time to others, enjoyed taking classes at the campus, enjoyed travelling and listening to music.
Survivors include her children: Cecil Clair (Sandra) Peschang of Kansas City, Mo., Alyce Ann (Bruce) Haring of Clinton, Iowa, Debborah Connery of Rochester Hills, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Vera (Bill) Eadie of Hanover; three nieces and two nephews.
In addition to her husbands; Genevra was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Gerald; a son-in-law, Robert Connery; and three granddaughters and one grandson.
A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, April 18, 2009 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hanover, with The Rev. L. Joel Jacobs officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover.
STELLA (WILCOX) BURNETT
, nee Stella Wilcox, oldest daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Joe Wilcox, passed away at Deaconess hospital, Freeport, at 12:15 Monday morning where she was taken for treatment the Friday before. Death was due to peritonitis. The family live on the old Wm. Rindesbacher farm west of town. Mrs. Burnette is survived by her husband, a little girl aged one and one-half years, her parents, other relatives and friends.
The funeral is this afternoon from the Methodist church, the pastor, Rev. E. Y. Knapp, being assisted by Rev R.Z. Kruzan, will have charge of the services. The burial will be in the Ladies Union cemetery.
DWIGHT J. BUSKER
, 54, of Scales Mound, died at 6:26 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2010, at the Richland Hospital, Richland Center, following a sudden illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, at the Galena Convention Center, Crossroads Community Church, Galena Campus, with Pastor Todd Brewer officiating. Burial will be in the Scales Mound Township Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, at Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, Scales Mound. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Galena Convention Center.
He was born on Jan. 10, 1956, in Freeport, son of James P. and Leona M. (Kriens) Busker. He was a 1974 graduate of Lena-Winslow High School.
He married Judy Beach on June 19, 1976, at Grace Free Methodist Church, McConnell. He was employed by Orica Explosives, East Dubuque.
Dwight was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cubs. He loved vegetable gardening and to cook.
Surviving are his wife, Judy; five children, Jason, of Apple River, Brian (friend, Jami Lopp), of Scales Mound, Jeremy (Mariea), of Orlando, Fla., and Robert and Melissa Busker, both of Scales Mound; five grandchildren, Briana, Jasmine, Chloe, Natalie and Brody; his parents, James and Leona Busker, of Freeport; two sisters, Mary Dagel, of Maryville, Tenn., and Rosalie (Donald) Coyner, of Silver Springs, Fla.; a brother, Dan (Toni) Busker, of McConnell; and his in-laws, Sue (Tim) Doherty, of Mount Carroll, and Jim (Shelby) Beach, of Apple Canyon Lake. He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Gary Dagel.
CLAYTON LAMONT BUTLER
, 83, of Nora, died Tuesday morning at Villas of Shannon Nursing Home, Shannon, IL. He retired from the maintenance department of Structo Manufacturing. Born on Oct 12, 1902, in Nora Township, he was the son of Delbert and Mary (Bechtold) Butler. He married Edna McKee in Nora on Jan 9, 1926. She died May 27, 1985. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Eileen (Robert) Delker of Nora and Mrs. Dorothy (James) Franklin of Elmore, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, one brother and one sister, in addition to his wife. Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Ladies Union Cemetery, Stockton. The Rev. Carl Lundgren, pastor of the Nora Community Church will officiate. There will be no visitation. Arrangements were completed by Hermann Funeral Home, Stockton.
FRANCINE (RICHARDS) BYERS
, 84, left this earth to join her beloved Sam at 2:16 p.m. Monday, July 20, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.
Private family graveside services will be Saturday, July 25, at Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 24, at Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, Galena.
She was born on Sept. 14, 1924, in Montezuma, Iowa, daughter of Robert and Neva (Kirby) Richards. At age 18, she boarded a train to Philadelphia to meet her childhood sweetheart, Sam, and they entered the union of marriage, which lovingly lasted for 64 years until Sam's death on April 30, 2007.
Fran and Sam were partners in every sense of the word as they worked side-by-side in the newspaper business, culminating with co-ownership of the Galena Gazette from 1962, until their retirement in 1985.
As hard as she worked with Sam to grow the business, nothing in the world was more important than their daughter, Pam, and grandsons, Jeff and Jake. She never missed an opportunity to cheer them on from the sidelines, and she delighted in the success of her family. Fran was a private and strong woman who truly enjoyed quiet conversations with her family and friends. Some of her most enjoyable evenings were spent at The Log Cabin and the Galena Elks Lodge. She was an avid Wisconsin Badgers, Green Bay Packers and New York Yankees Fan. For the past seven years, she adored being a hands-on grandma to her three great-grandchildren, soon to be four, always stocking her fridge with their favorite food and drinks and whipping up their favorite meal when they would frequently come to visit. Our lives are indelibly marked and vastly enhanced simply by her love.
She will be forever loved and missed by her son-in-law, Terry Miller, of Galena; grandsons, Jeff (Jodi) Zeal, of Lena, and Jake (Michelle) Zeal, of Dubuque; her great-grandchildren, Jenna Elizabeth, Jacob Andrew and Alexia Sam; brothers-in-law, Duane (Nancy) Lowe and Norval (Donna) Lowe; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She also was preceded in death by her daughter, Pam Miller; and her parents.

OLIVE BYRUM
, 79, died Wednesday, September 14, 1955 in a Freeport hospital where she had been a patient. She was born in Wards Grove Township, Jo Daviess County October 7, 1875, the daughter of Robert and Mary (Wilson) Dick. She was married on February 3, 1907 to Joseph M. Byrum. He died in 1950.
Survivors include a son, Morrie Byrum of Stockton; a daughter, Mrs. Alta Gustafson of Los Alamitos, California; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Cora Lebkicher of Freeport, and Mrs. Lola Tiffany of Stockton; and two brothers, Oscar and Joseph Dick, both of Stockton. She was a member of the Universalist Church and the Royal Neighbors.
Funeral service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. (CST). The Rev. John McMartin, pastor of the Universalist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Ladies Union Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hermann Funeral Home Friday night and until noon Saturday.
