Francis Ray Kelley

Francis Ray Kelley, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Sam C. Kelley, was born November 20, 1922 and  departed this life on December 9, 1964 at the age of 42 years and 19 days. Besides his wife, Evelyn; daughter, Darlene, and son, Dickie, he is survived by grandmothers, Mrs. Mexico Kelley and Mrs. Mary Calhoon of Goreville; parents, Mr. & Mrs. Sam C. Kelley, Goreville; two brothers, Lester Kelley, Nashville, Tenn. and William D. Kelley of Goreville; and one sister, Mrs. Pete Ray of Goreville. He also leaves to mourn his departure a number of nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.

Ray grew up in this community and graduated from Goreville High School. He worked in Elgin until World War II when he was called and served with the 3rd Army in France. March 26, 1948, he united in marriage to Evelyn Bradley of Chicago. About sixteen years ago he transferred from Downey Veteran's Hospital in Chicago to the Marion Veteran's Hospital where he remained employed.

Gooden and Evelyn made their home in Goreville. Here Darlene and Dickie were born. Here they found Christ and here they planted firm family roots in civic and church life. Here they planted the word "Gooden" a reality in the hearts of all who knew him. His work for God and fellowmen will be sadly missed.

When we see a young man in his prime busy being a glad father, working for home and community and doing God's will called home, we are tempted to question, why? But let us not question God's Will. Perhaps there will be great benefits come from God by his going home.

So let all here assembled, By his example, Give soul to God. With mind amuse, And God's plan to use, Rid the world of it's abuse, And prepare for a better place to live.
