Kenneth L. Underwood

Kenneth L. "Sleepy" Underwood, 77, died at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan.2, 1988, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Marion.

He was born Feb. 15, 1910 in Goreville to Allen and Pearl Underwood. He married Helen Benson in Metropolis on Dec. 11, 1932. She survives.

Other survivors include one son-in-law, Paul Hutchison of Longview, Texas; one brother, Bob Underwood of Mattoon; one sister, Nadine Benson of Goreville; and two grandsons, Tim Hutchison of Dongola and Terry Hutchison of Longview, Texas.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents and on sister, Mrs. Coy (Lucille) Maze.

Sleepy served in the U. S. Army during WWII, landing with the 24th Infantry Division of the Omaha Beach on VE Day in France. He was wounded on VE Day plus 3 and awarded the Purple Heart. Returning home he farmed for a short time, later entered the postal service as a rural mail carrier. He retired in 1972.

He was a member of the Goreville United Methodist Church, and Rural Letter Association and was an Army Veteran Of WWII.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the United Methodist Church in Goreville, with rev. Glen Tieman and Rev. Alan Milligan. Interment will be in the Busby Cemetery. Meredith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
