contributed by Larry Toler William Daniel
Toler was born on October 14, 1835 in Union County near
Boswell School house. He died suddenly at the home of Oscar Anderson, a neighbor, two miles west of Goreville, January 10, 1924, age 88 years, 2 months and 26 days. Short Funeral services were held on January 11 at Mr. Anderson's home, conducted by Rev. Rushing. Interment was in the family cemetery near Regent where the deceased passed much of his life as a farmer. Mr. Toler was united in wedlock to Hilda Miles, March 2, 1854. To this union was blessed 12 children, 6 boys and 6 girls, of which only three survive, Mrs. Eliza Burns of Goreville, J. M. Toler of Marion and W. D. Toler in Texas. After a companionship of over 58 years, Hilda Miles Toler died October 12, 1912. Uncle Bill, as he was commonly known, married Elizabeth Wright, who lived only three years. He later married Mary Lindsey who survives him. Also one brother Thos. Toler and the three children listed above, 18 grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn their loss. The deceased professed faith in Christ about the year 1870 and in his lingering years expressed his willingness and a desire to go quietly which was granted him when the force which had kept life going beyond the 3 score and ten seemed to leave his body to its own resources. Uncle Bill had two characteristics well known to all who knew him, his word, which he kept inviolate and his privileges and duties as a citizen. He always managed to go to the poles on election day even though at times he had to be taken by his neighbors who were always Willing to assist him in any way possible, having told the writer the last presidential made 17 presidents he had voted for. Uncle Bill was one of the few remaining pioneers who attended the debate of Lincoln and Douglas at Springfield. [NOTE: Hilda Miles should be Hiley Miles.] Vienna Times, January 17, 1924 |
