Pearl Russell Underwood

Pearl, the daughter of A. J. and Leanna Sullivan Russell was born near Goreville, Dec. 18, 1884, and passed away at her home Sunday evening May 28th, 1939, at the age of 54 years, 5 months and 10 days.  She was preceded in death by her parents a number of years ago.

She was united in marriage to Allen L. Underwood, Jan. 20, 1907, and to this union were born the following children:  Lovell Underwood, Mrs. Lucille Maze, Mrs. Nadine Benson and Robert Lee Underwood, all of Goreville.  She is also survived by one grandchild, Allen Gale Benson, who was her pride and joy.

She was one of a family of nine children with these surviving  brothers and sisters, Mrs. Nora Jesse, Mrs. Sophrona Lovelace, Mrs. Ethel Toler, Mrs. Fannie Escue and Lowell and Owen Russell all of Goreville.

She professed faith in Christ at the age of 16 years and united with the Methodist Church of Goreville where she proved her sincereness by her consecrated life spent in the interests of the church and by her attendance and service as long as health permitted.

The same love she bestowed upon her own children was also given to two sons-in-law and one daughter-in-law, and the love, devotion and care which she has given to her father-in-law has been remarkable.

The quiet attitude of Pearl seemed to exemplify, "let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man," for she has shared her home with many and has added much to the sum of human joy, and if everyone whom she did some loving service to would bring a blossom to her grave she would sleep to-night beneath a wilderness of flowers.
