La Salle County IL Biographies

Thomas Tkach, who lives 16 miles southwest of Glen Ullin (in Grant county) came from Streeter, Illinois, in 1904. He had about $800 which he had earned in a coal mine. Filing on a homestead in 137-90, he tried the wheat game, but soon caught the drift to diversification. Corn, hogs and cream are now his winners. He farms a section, having purchased 480 acres since taking his homestead. He also has a fine residence and big barn, all clear of incumbrance and considers his holdings worth $20,000. "Keep out of debt" is his slogan. Naturally he prefers his prosperous out-of-doors life in Dakota to his subterranean existence in Illinois.
