HAROLD SAMUELS DEAD
He Was But Twenty Years Old - Remains Taken To Illinois
That dread disease, tuberculosis, claimed another victim Friday afternoon at 3:30 when Harold D. Samuels passed away at his home, 938 Iowa Avenue. And as it is so often the case, the deceased was just entering upon life with the brightest prospects before him, being but twenty years of age. His illness was of five months duration.
Harold Samuels was of a disposition that makes friends quickly and holds them ever after. As day clerk at the New West hotel, he came into contact with many persons from out of the city and the sadness that is occasioned by his untimely death will not be confined to Iowa City and the old home in Illinois.
The young man leaves his father, mother, and one brother Claud Samuels, clerk at the St. James hotel to mourn his loss. The body was taken Saturday morning for Marseilles, Illinois for interment in the family lot of the cemetery there.

KATHERINE SAUERESSIG (nee POHL)
Mrs. Katherine Saueressig was born near Perkins Grove, on August 30, 1852. Her parents were Gabriel Pohl and Elizabeth Pohl, nee Erbes, pious Christians, who had their child brought to the Lord in Baptism, at an age, and under whose care she enjoyed the benefits of a Christian training. After having reached the required age and having completed the reparatory course of instruction, she was confirmed at the Perkin's Grove church. On Feb. 11, 1872, she was joined in marriage to William Saueressig, with whom she enjoyed a happy and blessed life, until he was taken from her in death on Jan. 21, 1908. The deceased did not continue to make her home on the farm after this. Five years ago last October, she moved to town, where she and her sister, Miss Mary Pohl, have since lived together. Of the six children born to her and her husband during their married life, two died in infancy, and one of the greatest sorrows of her life, was the loss of her son, Phillip, who died at the age of 22 years, about 16 years ago. The other three children with 6 grandchildren, remain to mourn the death of a loving and devoted mother. Mrs.Elizabeth Truckenbrod, Wm. G. Saueressig, and John Carl Saueressig. She has one brother, John Pohl, of Mendota, and three sisters---Mrs. Margaret Koerper and Miss Mary Pohl, of Mendota and Mrs. Elizabeth Schoenneshoefer, of Lostant. The deceased was of strong constitution and until several years ago, had very little illness and sickness to endure. When she was afflicted shortly before the death of her husband, she gained relief by means of an operation. Her health after that was quite good for some years. But the dreaded disease of cancer again made its appearance about two years ago. Since then her health and strength have gradually left her. Slowly she saw the end approaching, and not with fear and worry, but with longing and hope she made ready to meet it. At times it seemed too long for her, as though she could not endure to wait longer, but always again the spirit of Christian patience and meekness would conquer and she would find comfort and strength in the use of God's word and prayer. And finally her longing was fulfilled and her hopes realized. Since Saturday she grew weaker, and on Monday it was evident that she was soon to be relieved. She lingered until almost midnight, when at a quarter of twelve the Lord came and took her weary soul away. Peaceably, without suffering, without a struggle she slumbered into eternity. Her age was 62 years, 8 months, and 22 days. Peace be with her. The funeral services will be held on this Thursday afternoon, at 1 o'clock, in English by Rev. Voelker. The remains will be taken to the Perkin's Grove church, where services will be conducted by the Rev. Hilly. Interment in the Perkins Grove cemetery. William Peter Saueressig was born in Bornich, Heoz Nassauschen, Germany, June 16th, 1843. At the age of six, he accompanied his parents to this country, the family settling near Knox Grove, Illinois, where the father purchased a farm. Here our subject grew to manhood and lived his entire life. At the age of sixteen, he was confirmed and became united with St. Paul's Lutheran church at Perkin's Grove, remaining a faithful and ardent member throughout his life. In 1872, he was united in marriage with Kathrina Pohl. Six children blessed this union, of whom three sons preceded the father in death. A man of industry and thrift, especially interested in and attentive to the welfare of his family, whom he dearly loved. Through his death the community has lost an honest, good friend and trustworthy neighbor and citizen and his family, a good and true husband and kind and loving father. He had been a sufferer from a complication of diseases for the last few years. He was of the nature, which bears all bravely and he suffered patiently and without complaint or murmur. Last July, he suffered a slight paralytic stroke and since grew weaker, until January 21th, he departed this life at just twelve o'clock for that world devoid of struggle and pain. He leaves to mourn his loss, a devoted and sorrowing wife, a daughter, Mrs. H. S. Truckenbrod, and two sons, William and John, also two sisters, Mrs. Casper Yost of Lake View, IA., and Mrs. Mary Baker, of Bernich, Germany. The large attendance of friends and relatives at the funeral services, which were held at St. Paul's Lutheran church at Perkin's Grove, mark the esteem and love in which the deceased was held. Rev. Giese officiated at the services and the interment occurred at the Perkin's Grove cemetery. Among those attending from afar were: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Zilm, Robert Schoenneshoefer and Mrs. Dr. Schoenneshoefer and daughter, Miss Lucile, of Lostant: Max Mauerman, of Chicago; Wm. Esterday, of Van Orin, and Miss Anna Weitzel of Odebolt, IA. Copied as written in: The Sun Bulletin, Mendota, IL, January 31, 1908, Page 1 - Contributed by Pat Esterday

MRS. CARL SCHUETZ, (nee Pohl)
Mrs. Carl Schuetz, 45, departed this life on Sunday evening, January 18, 1931, about eight o'clock, after a long illness and following an operation performed some weeks ago in hopes that this might be the means of improvement and saving her life. Skilled physicians and trained nurses did all that human hand could perform and for a time it did appear that she would be able to again resume her place in the household and finally be restored to health, but all availed for aught and her strength gradually grew weaker until the end came on Sunday night. Mrs. Schuetz was the sixth among nine children born to Mr. George J. and Katherine M. Bilhorn Pohl. She was born in Clarion Township on June 14th. 1885. She was given the name of Caroline Barbara in holy baptism. Ten months after her birth the family removed to a farm east of Mendota. Here she attended the religious instructions as imparted by the Lutheran church and was confirmed on Palm Sunday, April 3, 1900. She then attended high school for some time. In 1909 she came to Mendota with her parents. A year later, on October 5th. 1910, she was united in marriage with Mr. Carl Schuetz. This union proved to be a happy one and one child, a son, George Schuetz was born. The deceased was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran church, a constant attendant upon the services and all through her career she has tried to exemplify the teachings of her church and all that was good. She took an active interest in the Ladies Aid society and her many acquaintances always spoke of her in the highest terms. Her family and friends were greatly grieved by the afflictions which came upon her. During her suffering she experienced much love and drew richly from the fountain of spiritual grace. She was patient and resigned and passed peacefully to that other world where loved ones were waiting to greet her. Her death has caused sincere sorrow and heartaches and sympathy is expressed to the bereaved members of the family. Mrs. Schuetz was preceded in death by her father, Mr. George J. Pohl, a little brother, Louis, and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Setchell, who died at the age of 42 years. She leaves to mourn, her husband, Mr. Carl Schuetz, her only son, George, her aged mother, Mrs. Katherine Pohl, and the following brothers and sisters; Miss Elizabeth Pohl, Mr. Fred Pohl, Mrs. Ezra Betz, Mr. Gabriel Pohl, Mr. Henry Pohl, Mr. K. W. Pohl, numerous other relatives and many friends. The funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at St. John's Lutheran church, her pastor, the Rev. A. W. Engelbrecht, being in charge. There was a large concourse of friends who were present to pay their last sad tribute of respect to the departed. "Fair's treasurer dies after accident on farm:
An inquest is pending into the death of Tri-County Fair Association treasurer Webster M. (Webb) Setchell, 66. He was killed in a farm accident late Tuesday morning east of Pairie Center. LaSalle County Coroner Marion Osborne of Seneca said Setchell was unloading feed in a cattle lot from a trailer hitched to the back of a tractor. The feed was being augered into a bin with a power take-off but the guard from the power take-off had been removed. After the feed was augered into the bin, Setchell got off the tractor to stop the power take-off, Osborne said. There was no hood on the tractor and the long coat Setchell was wearing became entangled in the take-off. Death was apparently caused by a broken neck, Osborne said. The accident occurred on a farm on the south side of U. S. 52, one mile west of the Freedom Cemetery. Mrs. Setchell was able to see the feed lot from their home. When she did not see any activity at the lot, she went to investigate and found her husband. Osborne said he didn't know the exact time of the accident but thought it occurred between 10:30 and 11 a.m. An ambulance from Ottawa was called to the scene. Osborne pronounced Setchell dead and the body was brought to Merritt's Funeral Home. Funeral services for Mr. Setchell of RR 2 Ottawa will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Meritt's Funeral Home with the Rev. Ellsworth Young of the Waltham Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Restland Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Dave Setchell, Don Dinges, Dave Wilson, Dale Wilson and Tom and John Setchell. Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. today, Wednesday, at the funeral home. Memorials are directed to the Waltham Presbyterian Church.
