Major J. H. Widmer and Miss Fronia Wiswell

Henry Republican, November 16, 1882

We learn from the Galesburg Register of the marriage of Major J. H. Widmer of Ottawa and Miss Fronia Wiswell of that city. The marriage took place on Thursday morning of last week. That paper describes the occasion as follows: "The home of the bride was the scene of the ceremony and its parlor was adorned with a profusion of choice floral decorations. In one corner there was a pretty festoon, the center of which contained the letter W., the initial letter of each name. Beneath this stood the happy couple, pronounced one by the Rev. O. W. Williams. The presents were elegant, substantial and numerous. The bride is well known here as a lady of refined and cultured tastes and who will carry with her the abundant and kindest wishes of all acquainted with her. Major Widmer is one of the most prominent lawyers of Ottawa and in addition to being a skilled attorney, is a genial, whole souled gentleman. The pair took the noon train for Ottawa, to dive at once into the mysteries of housekeeping."

Shirley Ann Pohl, Compton, Marries Markus V. Baccus in Mendota Church

Contributed by Pat Esterday

Candelabra and four decorated Christmas trees over which was placed a Christmas star formed the setting for the wedding of Miss Shirley Ann Pohl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Pohl of Compton, and Markus V. Baccus of Champaign son of Mr. and Mrs. Luke Baccus of Metropolis which took place Christmas Eve at 5:00 o’clock in St. John’s Lutheran church in Mendota. The Rev. G. H. Doermann officiated at the double ring ceremony.

Pews along the main aisle of the church were decorated with white satin bows.

Preceding the ceremony, Mrs. G. H. Doermann, wife of the pastor, played a group of the bride’s favorite carols. Robert Pohl of Valparaiso, Ind., sang “Till the End of Time” preceding the service and during the ceremony “The Lord’s Prayer.” The traditional weddings marches were played by Mrs. Doermann for the processional and recessional.

Alencon Lace Gown

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a white, sheer gown of Alencon lace fashioned with long sleeves coming to a point over the wrists, sweetheart neckline, tiny satin buttons down the back and at the wrists and mousseline de sole skirt with a full train. Her tulle veil was fingertip-length and appliquéd with satin hearts and brocade styled on a tiara of orange blossoms. The bride’s bouquet was a shower arrangement of white roses and bridal wreath and her only jewelry was a strand of pearls. The bride carried out the tradition of something old in her veil which was worn by her mother at her wedding, something new, something borrowed and something blue.

Miss Maxine Myers was maid of honor and wore a pastel aqua gown designed with a fitted bodice of brocade over tulle, cap sleeves and long skirt of mousseline de sole. She wore a busher veil held in place by a tiara of aqua roses and carried a shower bouquet of white chrysanthemum pompoms.

Wedding Dinner

Harold Adams of Champaign was the best man and Wayne Baccus, brother of the bridegroom, and Eugene Pohl, brother of the bride, both of Champaign, served as ushers.

For her daughter’s wedding, Mrs. Pohl chose a sky blue dress suit trimmed in gold with black and white accessories. The bridegroom,s mother wore a gray suit with black accessories.

Following the ceremony a four course wedding dinner was served at the home of the bride’s parents near Compton for 40 guests. The dining room was decorated with white bells and chimes and the bridal table was centered with a four-tiered wedding cake, baked by the bride’s mother and decorated with red rosebuds and green leaves and topped with a miniature bride and bridegroom under a silver bell. The same ornament was used at the bride’s parents wedding. On each side of the cake were lighted candles.

Wedding Trip

Assisting with the serving of the dinner were Miss Violet Hoelzer and Miss Dorothy Bittner of Paw Paw, cousins of the bride, Mrs. Fred Gustavson, aunt of the bride, Mrs. Clarence Walter, Mrs. Walter Meisel, Mrs. Erhardt Jauch, Mrs. Theodore Wagner and Mrs. Myrtle Kramer.

The couple left on a wedding trip. For traveling the bride wore a green suit with matching hat and accessories and a corsage of roses taken from her bridal boquet.

Mrs. Baccus was graduated from Lee Center high school with the class of 1946 and then attended the University of Illinois, after which she was employed at Robeson’s department store in Champaign. The bridegroom was graduated from the Metropolis high school with the class of 1942 and was in the Army for three years. Upon his discharge he entered the University of Illinois, where he is studying at the present time.

Out-of-town Guests

The couple will make their home in Champaign.

Attending the wedding and reception were Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hoelzer of Paw-Paw, the bride’s god-parents; Mr. and Mrs. John Hoelzer Sr., of Mendota, grandparents; Jacob Pohl of Mendota, the bride’s grandfather; Mr. and Mrs. Luke Baccus of Metropolis, the bridegroom’s parents; Miss Helen Stubli of Amboy; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gustavson of Mendota; Jim Lord of Cherry; Mrs. Myrtle Kramer of Rockford; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Walters and daughters of Compton; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Meisel of Arlington; Mr. and Mrs. Ehardt Jauch and sons of Mendota; and Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Wagner and sons of Ashton.
