Joseph Stewart
Lee & Bureau Co



Joseph Stewart was the son of John Stewart, and was born about 1800 in Herkimer County New York. Joseph died, January 25, 1882, Malden, Bureau County Illinois.

His first marriage occurred in Truxton, Courtland County, New York to Betsy Souls who was the daughter of William & Deborah Souls. Betsy was born 1818 in New York and died in 1848 Truxton, Courtland County New York.

Joseph then married a second time to Jane Rose and together, with the family, they came to Illinois in 1856, locating in Lee County Illinois , where his second wife died.



Children of Joseph Stewart

1. Osker (Oscar) Stewart (s/o Joseph M. Stewart & Betsy Souls), according to the burial, Truxton Village Cemetery, given as Nov. 1, 1842, age 3 yrs, 1 mo.

2. Solomon Stewart (s/o Joseph Stewart M. & Betsy Souls), b. abt 1841, Truxton, Courtland Co., NY. He joined Co. D of the 34th Infantry Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers on Sept 7, 1861. On the Muster roll is is described as Private, age 21, height 5ft 9 inches tall, hair brown, eyes black, complexion dark, single, farmer, born Cortland Co. NY, and giving his residence as Amboy, Lee Co. ILL. A note on the muster sheet says he died of disease at Nashville, TN March 29, 1862. There is, I am told, a memorial tomb stone for him in the Amboy cemetery.

3. Alvah Stewart (s/o Joseph Stewart & Betsy Souls), b. abt 1843, Truxton, Cortland Co., NY. died July 6, 1911, Marshall Co. Iowa of natural causes (see obit for this man). He joined Co. D of the 34th Infantry Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers on Sept 7, 1861. On the Muster roll he is described as Private, age 19, height 5 ft, 9 inches, hair brown, eyes hazel, complexion light, single farmer, b. Cortland Co. NY, giving residence as Prairieville, Lee Co. ILL.

4. William Stewart (s/o Joseph Stewart & Betsy Souls), b. abt 1845, Truxton, Cortland Co., NY. He joined Company A, 75th Illinois Infantry Regiment of the Illinois Volunetter Aug. 9, 1862. On the Muster roll he is described as Private, age 18, height 5ft, 8 inches, hair light, eyes light, complexion light, single, farmer, b. Cortland Co. NY, giving residence as Dixon, Lee Co. ILL. A note on the muster sheet says he died of disease at Evansville, IN Dec 30, 1863.

5. John Stewart (s/o Joseph Stewart & Betsy Souls),b. abt. 1849, Truxton, Cortland Co., NY. Joined Company H, 3rd Cavalry, of the Illinois Volunteers on Feb 21, 1865. On the Muster roll he is described as Private, age 17, height 5ft, 3 inches, hair brown, eyes blue, complexion fair, farmer, b. NY, and giving his residence as China, Lee Co. ILL. He married E.M. Lawless, Atascosa county TX, and died Marcy 28, 1910, buried in Jackson Co. OK.

6. Elisa Rose (daugher of 2nd wife Jane Rose), b. abt 1844. Married James Watson and settled in Bureau Co. ILL

7. Melvina (d/o Joseph Stewart & 2nd wife Jane Rose), b. May 1852, Cortland Co. NY, died 1925 Henry Co. ILL, married Homer Cully, Henry Co. ILL 1886.
