EVELYN SWARTHOUT
Five Year Old Organist

Bar

Although she is only five years old, Evelyn played some of her own compositions on the pipe organ before the Wisconsin Music teachers' association last week in Oshkosh. She also reads well and learned to read herself. She has been writing music ever since she was three years old, and the things which she writes are far above the average compositions of children. Her father, D. M. SWARTHOUT, has always taken pleasure in training her ear, for he wants her to be a true musician, and he feels that she will be.

She writes compositions as she feels them. Her pieces are the musical interpretations of her little kindergarten poems and nursery rhymes, and often of bird songs which she hears. Her parents have always encouraged her to "tell a story on the piano" and her compositions are just that. In her kindergarten work she also does a bit of dancing, and her musical sense helps her in that as well as in her playing.

Evelyn was one of the three children which Miss Ruth Requath took to Wisconsin to demonstrate her work before the music teachers there.
