Mrs. Harriet M. Shaw

Mrs. Harriet M. Shaw, widow of Henry Shaw, died at 10:45 Tuesday night at
the residence of her son, 1614 North Broadway. She would have been seventy-nine
years old in May. Her death was caused by paralysis, after an illness of
two years. Mrs. Shaw had been a resident of Macon county for almost seventy-five
years, and was well known among the old residents.
Mrs. Shaw was born in Green township, Ross county, Ohio, May 12, 1837. With
her parents she came to Decatur when she was only four years old, and ever
since then she has lived in or near this city. She had been a member of the
Methodist church since early childhood. Her husband, Henry Shaw, died in
the Soldiers' Home at Quincy, June 6, 1896.
STROKE OF PARALYSIS
Mrs. Shaw suffered a stroke of paralysis two years ago. The second stroke
came four weeks ago, after she had already been confirned to her bed for
five months. She had been unconscious for the past week and her death was
not unexpected. She is survived by one son, D.C. Shaw, at whose home she
died, and one daughter, Mrs. E.B. Gates, of929 South Water street. There
are also four grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and two great-great
grandchildren. She also has a sister, Mrs. Moses Clark, at Hayworth, Ill.
The funeral of Mrs. Shaw will be at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the
residence, 1614 North Broadway. The internent will be in Greenwood.

Charles H. Shepherd
Sudden Death
On last Monday an altercation took place in the Gazette Office, in this city,
between a Mr. A. Green and Andrew J. Davis, editor of the Gazette. Mr. Charles
H. Shepherd was present and was summoned before the Police Magistrate as
a witness to the case; the room was very much (?)ded, and immediately after
he was sworn and while the Magistrate was swearing another witness, Mr. Shepherd
s(..?..) and said he felt unwell and must step down; he had barely seated
himself in a chair before he was noticed falling (..?..)er; he was immediately
carried to the windows in the front of the room and efforts made to restore
him, but he breathed easily for a few minutes and life was extinguished.
There were some four or five physicians present, who exerted themselves to
restore him but to no purpose. Mr. Shepherd was an excellent citizen, a very
quiet and inoffensive man; he had been unwell for a long time and had lost
within a short period his wife and two sons; he had just returned from Kentucky
whither he had taken his daughter, the only member of his household left.
He was buried on Tuesday last by Decatur Lodge, No. 65, and Celestial Lodge,
No. 186, I.O.O.F., his being at the time of his death a worthy member of
the former Lodge.

Died in this city on the 9th inst., Elwood C. Starr, son of J. G. and Susan
Starr. Aged 10 years, 1 month and 3 days.

Mrs. Susan Starr
Mrs. Susan Starr of 823 North Broadway died at 6:30 Friday evening at St.
Mary's hospital. She had been ill for four months. her death
was caused by Bright's disease. She was forty years old. She
was born in Effingham July 23, 1872, coming with her parents to Decatur in
1882. She is survived by her mother, Mrs. A.C. James, three sisters,
Mrs. William Leighton of Chicago, Mrs. F.W. Dempsey of Des Moinses, Ia.,
and Mrs. Flo Merkle of Springfield, and one brother, H.C. James of Decatur.
The bady was removed to Moran's undertaking establishment and prepared
for burial. The funeral of Mrs. Starr will be held at 4 o'clock Sunday
afternoon at Mroan's chapel. The internment will be in Greenwood.

Mary L. Smith, 79, of Decatur, died Saturday (March 14, 2009) at her residence.
Mary was born on Dec. 26, 1929, in Quincy, the daughter of Fred and Grace
Clifford Berblinger. She married Robert W. Smith on Feb. 19, 1949, in Quincy
and he died on Oct. 6, 1995, Mary was a seamstress for Andrea Sewing Factory,
a member of Emmanuel Southern Baptist Church and the Seamstress Local Union.
She is survived by her two daughters, Kathy Holsapple and husband, Roger,
of Ellijay, Ga., and Diana Garver of Decatur; a sister, Mildred Hull of Quincy;
grandchildren, Trenia Compton and husband, Windell, Roger Holsapple Jr. and
wife, Vickie, Stephanie Burgener and husband, Matt, Kristin Garver, Chad
Smith, Garrett Garver and Robin Smith; great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Destiny
and Levi Compton, Lauren and Mallory Burgener, Roger, Kayla, Camden and Alex
Holsapple, Lexie Smith and Colin Smith. Mary was preceded in death by her
parents; husband Robert; one son, Robert W. Smith Jr., and two brothers,
Fred and Orville and one sister, Dorothy Sisk. SERVICES: 11 a.m. Tuesday
in the Emmanuel Southern Baptist Church in Decatur. Burial will be in North
Fork Cemetery at Decatur. VISITATION: 5-8 p.m. Monday at Dawson and Wikoff
Funeral Home in Mount Zion. MEMORIALS: Emmanuel Southern Baptist Church.
