TAKEN FROM THE HENRY REPUBLICAN

January 5, 1871

Married in this city, at the Congregational church, by Rev. Mr. Coddington of Lacon, Charles E. Townsend, and Miss Susan H. Copeland

On last Sunday afternoon at the Congregational church in this city, was married Charles E. Townsend to Susan H. Copeland.  This was to us the most impressive marriage ceremony which we have witnessed for years.  To stand as they did facing a numerous, influential and approving company of relatives, and a cloud of other witnesses, in "God's own house", to our mind raised their vows there made to the dignity of a sacrament.  We have known them as children, and with interest have watched them as they have opened into man and womanhood.  They have always been equal to the then present; laying hold of it as a time of preparation for the sturggles inseparable from after life.  And thus prepared, we welcome them to the great throng of the wedded, and to all the joys, responsibilities and delights of married life.

On Monday they had a reception at the house of Mrs. S. B. Townsend, worthy of a loving mother and a worthy son and sister, relatives and friends ......... Tomorrow they leave for their new home at Black Buttes, Wyoming territory.  May God in his goodness guard and guide them, bless them will all earthly comforts, with all heavenly hopes, and preserve them from all griefs and all ills.

A Grand Wedding
Marriage of Mr. J. J. Baker and Miss Olive L. Camp

A very brilliant wedding, that has exceeded anything of the kind probably that has taken place in this burg, happened on Tuesday eveining, the parties being from families of our best citizens, none other thatn J. Finly Baker, son of Dr. J. G. Baker, and Miss Olive L. Camp, daughter of our lamented citizen Samuel Camp.  This happy event has been in preparation for a number of weeks, and of that liberal order of display, cummensurate with good taste, and the high standing and wealth of the families who had the matter in charge.

The marriage took place at the Presbyterian church at 8 p.m.  The windows of the church were hung in white drapery festooned with cedar, the chandileers, the pulpit, the gallery, and the chancel alike ornamented with evergrrens, while surmounting the pulpit cushion a very handsome boquet was visible.  Suspended on the wall back of the pulpit was the monogram, "BC", over which an arch of evergreens was placed giving fine effect to the otherwise elaborate decorations. .................At an early hour the church was filled to witness the solemn consecration of two lives to wedlock ......... At eight however the carriages were announced at the door, the carpet stretched to the church and every eye turned to witness the approach of the bridal party.

The bridesmain, Miss Lizzie Swan, escorted by the groomsamn, Mr. James C. Law, and then the bridal pair, Mr. Baker and Miss Camp, she reclining lovingly upon his arm, proceeded up the long aisle to the alter, where the Rev. John Winn, who had preceded them some time, was in readiness to receive them. .........The ceremonies at the church was but the prelude to the brilliant reception at the reception at the residence of Mrs. Samuel Camp............

The groomsman was Mr. Charles Monier, and the bridesmaid Miss Susan Duffield, the ceremony being pronounced by Rev. G. W. Miller, M. E. preacher of LaPrairie and Saratoga townships. Simply the family friends were present, (and these even make a large party), who bestowed many bridal gifts, choice and handsome upon the youthful bride. After the ceremony, the congratulations, then dinner, elegant and abundant for all, when at an early hour the groom and bride bade all their friends adieu, took the train at Henry at 4 p.m., and are away for the honeymoon, in the eastern part of the state. June Weddings
Scholes - Louden

Three weddings this week in Henry. A strange freak indeed, or rather an unusual occurrence, yet how delightful for Cupid to complete his work among June roses and showers of floral decorations. Two victims to the tender passion solemnized their betrothal on Tuesday evening at the residence of Mrs. T. P. Coan, on Western Avenue. … The contracting parties, Walter Scholes and Miss Rebecca Louden, were both born in this county, in Saratoga township, within one mile of eath other, and it is said the first time "Becca" went from home she was shown at Squire Scholes, where it is supposed Walter first saw her, out of which has grown the present happy event. Both have been reared in the same neighborhood, and their mutual loves have been plighted from long acquaintance, esteem, similarity and mutual personal attraction. Rev. William Tracy of Lacon tied the conjugal knot in the presence of about 150 witnesses, Messrs. T. F. McCoy and Ben Kline as ushers, were followed by Mr. Frank H. Brant of Varna, and Miss Lou Kline, who performed the duties of groomsman and bridesmaid. Miss Minnie Pool discoursed a wedding march in a masterly manner while the bridal party was passing. Congratulations, an elegant collation and sociability followed in turn until 11:40 o'clock, when Mr. and Mrs. Scholes, bade all an affectionate adieu, and left on the midnight train for their future home at Greenfield, Adair county, Iowa.

Mr. Walter Scholes is a successful grainbuyer, and with his brother William are doing a large business in our sister state. Miss Louden is one of our most intelligent and accomplished young women, and we share in the expressions of general congratulations and good wishes of all for their future domestic felicity, prosperity and longevity.
