J.H. Groff

Submitted by Norma Jean Huss

The subject of this sketch, Mr. J.H. Groff, was born in Indiana in 1851. He came to Metropolis in 1863 and attended the Metropolis Public Schools where he gleaned his education. During all those years of residence the same J.H. Groff has been an honorable man. He has by his many sterling qualities endeared himself to the hearts of our people. Mr. Groff established his shoe business, which is located on Ferry Street, in 1873. By strict attention to business and fair dealing he has built up a splendid trade. He also has expert workmen employed who do all kinds of repairing and the prices are very moderate.

J.H. Groff handles the well known brands of Crossett, Webber and Crawfords in mens shoes, and the famous Selby in ladies shoes. He has long since made it a rule to have every customer a satisfied customer and the result is that once you trade at J.H. Groff's you are almost certain to go back again if in need of anything in his line.

It is a well known fact to the buying public that there are often placed on the market certain shoes which are made only to sell shoes which have absolutely no merit, made of the very cheapest material with paper soles, etc. These shoes are often place on the market at ridiculously cut rate prices, when as a matter of fact they are dear at any price.

J.H. Groff never results to these cheap tricks to hood-wink the people and when you buy a pair of shoes from his store you can depend upon it that you are getting 100 cents value for every dollar spent. And we might add, parenthetically, that Mr. Groff is one of our progressive citizens who has the interest of Metropolis and Massac County at heart. He is ever ready to assist any worthy cause for the good of Metropolis and hence has co-operated with us, as recommended by the Commercial Club, in getting out this big issue of the Journal-Republican. May Mr. Groff live to enjoy many more useful years among us is our earnest wish.
