S. BARTLETT KERR

Submitted by Norma Jean Huss

Among men everywhere there must always be leaders. Persons not naturally demonstrative to too great a degree, with a high regard for the rights of other and possessing proper ideas as of the best means of advancing the interests of their communities are doubtless best fitted for leadership. They do not always attain to that position, but when they do their very character serves as a guarantee that the tasks intrusted to them will be well and faithfully performed, and that portion of the world which comes under their influence will be betted in its condition because of their services.

S. Barlett Kerr, whose admirable administration of discharging the duties of several offices of trust while a resident of Massac county has established the wisdom of the assertion that he would prove as able an official as he has a professional man, although still a young man, has had a remarkably busy career and is today conducting one of the business law, land, loan and real estate offices in this end of the state.

Mr. Kerr first saw the light at Burnham, Waldo County, Maine, on October 18th, 1863. he was educated in the Maine Central Institute at Pittsfield, Maine, at McKendree College at Lebanon, Ill., and in the city and high schools of Metropolis.

During his long residence her Mr. Kerr has held many offices among which are the following: Member of the Board of Education from 1887 t 1890, City Clerk of Metropolis from 1890 to 1892, Circuit Clerk of massac county from 1892 to 1896, Secretary Senate Committee on Appropriations from 1896 to 1900, member General Assembly from this District from 1900 to 1902,, City Attorney of Metropolis from 1902 to 1906, Master in Chancery of Massac county from 1906 to 1916, which position he now holds. Mr. Kerr was also Supervisor of Census for the 24th Congressional District for 1910. And in all of these many positions of trust he was never found wanting or failing to do his full duty.

He belongs to the Knights of Pythias, the Odd Fellows and improved Order of Red Men. He also affiliates with the Methodist church and is recognized as one of the very best and most dependable citizens in Massac County.

He is a booster for Metropolis.
