BROOKPORT
When Elijah McCormick, Sr., came to Illinois in 1819, there was a log cabin situated on the present site of Brookport, occupied by a colored family. The State of Illinois had been admitted one year. In the fifties the land was owned by Captain Davis, and early river man. The town was laid out in 1850 and chartered in 1855, twelve years after Massac became a county. The place was then known as Davis' Landing. The early history of Brookport [formerly called Brooklyn] is quite interesting. Men living in Massac County laid off the village, drew a map of the same, which also showed the railway survey, upon which they said the railroad was sure to be built "right away." The railway came in 1888 and the village began to grow. Dr. J.D. Young was the first mayor, in 1890.
Brookport lies across the Ohio River from Paducah, Ky., and a little below that city. It is the second city in Massac County. At the coming of the railroad Brookport did not exceed 100 in population; now they have upwards of 2,000 inhabitants.
Brookport is a thriving little city, where industry and thrift reap a just reward. In recent years manufacturing of buttons from the mussel shells out of the Ohio River has grown to large proportions, and the pearls found in mussels have been worth many fortunes.
Brookport is noted as one of the most important tie shipping points on the Ohio River. A
large amount of pig iron from river points is transferred here for shipment by rail. Brookport has a very bright
future. On this page will be found the most prominent business men represented.
