McDonough County forms a perfect square on the Mercator map projection.  
 
The largest city in the county, Macomb, is also the County seat.
 
Macomb is located in the center of county, with the courthouse almost precisely in the center of McDonough County.
McDonough County was founded in 1826. 
 
McDonough County is named in honor of Thomas Macdonough, who defeated a British squadron in the decisive naval Battle of Lake Champlain in the War of 1812.
