Alice Vance Welsh
McLean County, Illinois

[Gridley Sesquicentennial 1856 - 2006, Biographies of Gridley Residents 80 and 90 Plus Club]
(Transcribed by: Teri Moncelle Colglazier)

I was born September 9, 1912 in Cropsey, Illinois. I was the second child with two sisters and six brothers. By the time I was five; I was milking cows and driving horses, and working hard on the farm. On March 5, 1935, I married Marion Welsh and lived in the little house on the David Davis farm southeast of Gridley. After our daughter, Lois, was born we moved into the big house with Marion's mother, Miriam. There I cared for a multitude of extended family. Tending a large garden, canning, baking homemade buns, preparing large dinners as well as lunches when threshing, baling and shelling corn were going on; were all a part of my busy life. I have lived in the same home for 71 years and continue to enjoy my life, my family and friends. I have one daughter, Lois (Ben) Klein and three grandchildren. Bruce (Karen) Klein, Leanne (Roger) Ross and David (Katie) Klein. I have six great-grandchildren. We were honored as Grand Marshals of the first Gridley Fest Parade in 1990. Marion died in 1997.
