The area is today known as 'Lincolnland.' Abraham Lincoln first entered it in 1831 and it remained the center of his activities until his election to the Presidency in 1860.

Map shows the basic routes to Springfield, Illinois, always an important center for the early settlers of the area.

Illinois became a State in 1818; Sangamon county formed 1821; Menard county created 1839. Athens founded in 1831.
