The Springfield State Journal has been shown by some gentleman from Iowa the identical "Kirkham's Grammar" which Mr. Lincoln studied while living in Petersburg, Menard county, Illinois, about the year 1830. It was presented by Mr. Lincoln to the present Captain R. H. Rutledge, new of Burlington, Iowa, with whose father Mr. Lincoln boarded at the time. It originally bore upon the fly-leaf the name of Abraham Lincoln, with these not unfamiliar lines, "steal not this book," &c., but this has been torn out by subsequent usage. The volume, which is highly valued for its associations, is still the property of Captain Rutledge.
