Oakland, Iowa, March 18, 1937
"The oldest member of Company L, Tom Martin, 64, of Oakland, is being congratulated by Maj. Gen. Mathew A. Tinley. At the right is Brig. Gen. Charles H. Grah of Des Moines, Ia. Mr. Martin was 44 when he enlisted in teh world war. He served as a first-class private. "I wasn't wounded, but just worn out," Martin said. Most of his buddies were 18 years old."
Note from the Martins: "Uncle Tom was born in Petersburg, IL, August 5, 1873 to John A. Martin and Rachel (Kinney) Martin. Uncle Tom settled in Oakland, Iowa where this newspaper article is from."
