John William Powell died at his home west of this city, Tuesday morning, June 3, 1930, at 9:39 o'clock after an illness of about one week from pneumonia and asthmatic complications.

Deceased was born in Fleming county, Kentucky, April 9, 1877, and had reached the age of 53 years, 1 month and 24 days. He resided in Kentucky until about thirty years ago when he came to Athens where he made his home in this vicinity for the remainder of his life.

He was united in marriage to Miss Maud Hopwood, February 24, 1904. To this union nine children were born.

Deceased joined the Christian church at Athens October 4, 1924.

Surviving are his wife; five daughters, Mrs. William Copher of Athens, Mrs. George Phoenix of Upton, Wyoming, Gladys, Wilma, and Mary Elizabeth at home; three sons, Irwin, Harold, Julian of Athens; one son, Alvin, died in infancy; three brothers, Amos of Athens, Joe of Cantrall, Everette of Sherman, his father, John A. of Tallula and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the family residence, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Lewis P. Fisher of Cantrall officiating and interment was made in the Hall cemetery.
