Deceased was born in Princeton, New Jersey, March 1st, 1799; and was, therefore, 82years, 7 months and 26 days of age. He, with his parents emigrated to the state of Kentucky at the age of 8 years and resided there until he, with his family, immigrated t this state and settled in Menard county in the fall of 1853 or 4.
He and Miss Hannah Shanklin were married March 6th, 1829, and lived happily together until the spring of 1871, when his wife died. Eight children were born unto them: James, Ann, Mariah, Lucien, Margaret Ellen, Elizabeth, Mary Jane, William and Grace Isabelle. Elizabeth died in infancy. Grace Isabelle died May 29th, 1872. The remaining six survive. Deceased has been a strict, upright, consistent and devoted Christian all his life, having attached himself to the Presbyterian church in early manhood. He was a devoted husband; a kind indulgent father; a good neighbor; a model Christian; a worthy citizen; and a noble man of broad views. But our loss is his eternal gain.
