Hi,
Maybe I can be of some help. I'm a descendant of Rev. Willis Patchen. He married twice, first to Jennie, who died in 1885 at age 24, and then to Hester York Mesenheimer. Hester died June 23, 1911 and is buried in Carlinville, IL. Jennie is buried in the same place--I don't know her maiden name.

Rev. Willis Patchen was born in Illinois in 1849 and died in 1937. He, too, is buried in Carlinville.

I'll look for Matilda Jane Montgomery for you and post on this site if I find her. Did you know there is an entire web site for the Patchen/in family? It is managed by Shel Michaels, a Patchen descendant.

By the way, my mom was Phyllis Wood Patchen, daughter of Edward Willson Patchen and Elizabeth Tyrrell.

Joyce, I found your great great grandmother's marriage to Willis Patchen!! Maybe this was "Jenny"? Look at web site www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/marrcopy.html if you want to order the marriage record of Willis Patchen March 12, 1880, to Matilda Jane Montgomery. They were married in Menard County. License #4713. Record is in volume B, Page 34.

This also fills in a blank in MY genealogy, as I didn't know Matilda's name. I'm still not positive of Willis's full name--did he, I wonder, have a middle name? None is shown on the above record.

Jan

Jan,
My Matilda Jane (Smith) Montgomery Married William J. Montgomery in St. Louis Mo.in February ca.1850 and in 1866 had a son Gus. I saw the marriage in 1880 to Willis. Do you know when he was born?
Thanks for your time.

Hi Joyce,
Willis Patchen (Rev.)was born in Illinois July 6, 1849. He was the son of Sarah Stoddard, who was born in 1810 in Connecticutand who married Daniel Tomlinson Patchen in 1838. They had four children--Mary Stoddard Patchen, Charles Stoddard Patchen, Willis Patchen and Harriet Patchen.

Do I understand correctly that Matilda Jane (Smith) Montgomery may have married twice? Could you tell me what you'd found that linked her to the Patchen family? I'm also very new to genealogical research and am looking for any missing people in Mom's ancestry.

Matilda Jane can't be the same person as Jennie, though, because Jennie Patchen was born in 1862 and died in Macoupin Co. in 1885.

1. "Pullen Family"

I am looking for information on the Pullen family of Menard County, I find them on the 1880-1910 census, but no other mention of them. The Head of the family is Isaac F. Pullen wife Martha J.

Children: Virginia A, Isaac, Katie, Julia, William H., Emma, (poss son Charles C.), Pearl and Barbara.

The possible son Is a brother of a William H. Pullen I found on the 1900 census in Peoria Illinois. This William is listed as being born in May of 1876, and on the 1880 Menard County census, Isaac and Martha have a son William H. born in 1876. They are both listed as being born in Illinois. I did find an unknown Pullen boy born in Menard County in Sep on 1880, and the brother Charles was listed in 1900 as being born in Sep of 1880. The family originates out of Kentucky.

I think that this is compelling evidence. Besides that, William's uncle was a painter (house), and William H is listed as a house painter in 1900. Later in St Louis (poss the same person) William H is listed as a wallpaper hanger. I think there is definately enough evidence to substantiate this. The kicker is this, William H Pullen of IL and St Louis, MO - His children told me that they descend from an Isaac Pullen. Does that say something or what?

1. "Looking for Confederate Veterans buried in Menard County, IL"

My name is Gale Red, and I am the Commander of the Illinois Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. We are trying to find all the graves of known Confederate veterans who are buried in Illinois. So far, over 12,000 men have been found, most (about 11,500) are buried in the five national cemeteries at Alton, Camp Butler, Rock Island, Oakwoods (Chicago), and Mound City. However, we have found more than 500 so far scatterd in almost all counties of IL.

So far, we have not found any of our veterans in Menard County, but think it is possible someone will know of some.

We are hoping to find the graves, indentify the indivuals, collect biographical and service information on them, and eventually be able to place military markers on all the graves of those who don't have them. We would also like to perform memorial ceremonies for them if we can find living descendants who are interested. As you can imahgine, this is a very large task. If you know of any Confederate veterans buried anywhere in the state, please contact me with whatever information you can provide. We will be very grateful for any assistance in trying to find and honor these soldiers.

Sincerely,
Gale F. Red
