Menard County Queries

Please Read

The Illinois Trails Query Board moved to a new host in September 2004. It was not possible to transfer the queries previous to that date to the new query boards, but the Menard Co. queries have been saved and you may view them Here. Unfortunately, some of the old queries did not have email addresses, so you will need to submit your email address to me at kjvaughn3@gmail.com and I will include them with the old queries so that other researchers can respond to your query. You can also repost your query to the new board.

New Queries
Due to spamming and hackers, our "new" query boards had to be shut down in April 2005. At this time, there is no plan to start another query board. You can submit a Menard Co. related query directly to me via Email and I will post them on our site. Please put the word "Query" in the email subject line.

CHRISTENSEN, MILLER
Mark T Nelson marktnelson@verizon.net
February 12, 2008

I'm seeking information about my great-grandfather who was either a Christensen or a Miller with connections to Menard County.

Here's what I know:

Niels Christensen was, I think, his birth name.
Born in Denmark in 1849.
Emigrated to USA in 1869.
My great-grandmother, Cecelia Jorgenson (b. 1859) came to USA from Aalborg in 1884 with two young girls, Marie and Stine Jorgenson, according to Danish emigration records.

Ancestry.com has the following Illinois marriage record for Niels and Cecelia:
Illinois Marriages, 1851-1900
Name: Niels Christenson
Gender: Male
Spouse Name: Cecelia Jorgenson
Marriage Date: Sep 09, 1884
Marriage County: Menard
Comments: This record can be found at the County Court Records, Film # 1311614 - 1311615.

Two sons, Fred Christian (b.1885) and James (b.1888), list Illinois as their birthplace on census records. In fact, James' 1917 draft card lists his birthplace as "Springfield, Illinois.)

Family moved to Menasha, Wisconsin around 1889/1890, I would guess, based on birthdates of later children.

My great-grandfather's name appears as "Nels Miller" in 1900 Census of Menasha township. The census lists all the children above plus some new ones. However, the two older girls names appear as "Mary" and "Julia."

Nels died shortly after that census and does not appear on subsequent censuses.

In Wisconsin Nels' occupation was farmer. However, our family always said that the last name of "Miller" was taken because it had been his occupation somewhere earlier in his life (Denmark or Illinois?)

Can you help me find any information about this family during its Illinois years? I'm not sure whether they lived in Menard County, Sangamon County or in Springfield itself.

Was Married to Rosetta (Drennan) He passed away in 1958 and left her with 4 small children to raise as a single parent from her marriage to George T.
Their children were: Donald & Dale Naylor (Twins, Living) (This is my son's line here, Donald)

I believe that George T. Naylor's parents could of possibly of have been Della and Thomas O. Naylor? is this one of the people in any ones family tree?

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.
I am trying to research my son's, father's line unfortunately George T. Naylor died when his children were small and their mother passed away approx 1997 & they have no information to offer in this search, so this leave me asking many questions of others searching this surname also. I appreciate your time in reading and responding to this e-mail. I have been searching for a few years to no avail, till I read the posts on the Menard County board.

Thank you.

Attempting to locate my great-great grandfather Robert B. Burbridge b. abt. 1790-1800 in South Carolina who likely died in Menard County and my research suggests is in a Census Death Register for Menard County, Illinois. Wife Mary and my great-grandfather William R. appear in the 1850 Menard Census. Burial site for Robert and Mary Burbridge? Names and fates those who appear only as initials in the 1850 Census?

MARTIN, ABER, SHERMAN & EIFERT
by Marion Szczesniak
April 9, 2006
Hi all,
I am researching the MARTIN, ABER, SHERMAN & EIFERT families of Illinois. I am having some problems locating a marriage certificate for Mary EIFERT & John E. SHERMAN who were the parents of Mary SHERMAN, b. abt. 1870 in Springfield, Illinois. I have searched there for a marriage lic. for her parents but cannot locate one, and am so wondering if it is possible that they could've married in a neighboring county? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I do have a copy of Mary SHERMAN's marriage cert. and it states she was indeed the child of this couple. I cannot locate any other information on either parent.

Thanks you in advance,
Marion G. Szczesniak

Greetings: I am trying to locate information on a Mary Lackland Wright who came to central IL c. 1833 from KY. She was a widow when she moved with several of her children. One of her sons, William Lackland Wright, is buried in the Smedley Cemetery, Tallula, Menard Co., IL. I am wondering if Mary might have married a Smedley after coming to IL.

Do you have any information of Mary Lackland Wright or other Wright's in Menard County, IL that you would be willing to share? Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and best wishes for a Happy New Year.

Hardin & Jacob BALE
by Judy Hurdle
October 24, 2005
Hi, I have enjoyed so much all the things you have on your Menard Co. site. I am trying to fill in some holes in my family history regarding the grist/saw mills and carding mills at New Salem. They were run by my grandfathers, Jacob and Hardin Bale. I am interested in all information about the mills I can find and would be glad to share any information I have. I have extensive Bale family information but am searching for information on Lafayette Bale and May Bale Dwellinger, both children of Hardin Bale. Regards, Judy Hurdle
P.S. Also would like to know if there are any photos/pictures out there of Petersburg Woolen Mill which Hardin operated in Petersburg.
