Services for Charles Wesley Varner of Litchfield rural route three, a self-employed carpenter for more than 50 years before retiring 15 years ago, will be Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock in Ross funeral home, Rev James Ellerbrook, pastor of Union Avenue Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Asbury cemetery at Raymond. Friends may call Wednesday from 2 until 4 pm and from7 until 9 pm.
Mr Varner, 88 last April 2, died Monday night at 11:25 o'clock in St Francis Hospital where he was admitted on Sep 19 following an illness of several years. Born [April 2, 1882] on a farm near Harvel in Harvel Township, son of the late Charles and Lucinda Nash Varner, he married Emma Allen of Pleasant Hill in 1900 and they came to Litchfield in 1925. She died in March 1937, and on Feb 12, 1942, he married Mrs Mabel Boyd of Litchfield in St Charles MO. Mr Varner was a member of Union Avenue Christian church.
Besides his wife, Mabel, he is survived by a daughter by his first marriage, Mrs Edna [Frank] Kettler of Kirkwood, MO, three stepsons, Eugene Boyd of DeKalb, Leland Boyd of Litchfield, and Lavern Boyd of San Antonio TX, with two grandchildren and 11 step grandchildren and three step great grandchildren. He also leaves a brother, Willis Varner of Eugene OR, and a sister, Mrs Etta White, presently a patient in St Francis Hospital. Preceding him in death were three sons, Charles Varner, during World War Two, Walter and Claude Varner, three brothers, Roy, Ed, and Otto Varner, and a sister, Mrs Maude [Charles W] Kelly. Services for Mrs Mabel Irene Varner of 1119 N Van Buren St, Litchfield, will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock in Union Avenue Christian Church by Rev James H Ellerbrook. Burial will be in Asbury cemetery near Raymond. Friends may call at Ross funeral home Wednesday between 3 and 5 pm and 7 and 9 pm.
Mrs Varner, 76 last July 4, died Monday night [d. 25 AP 1977] at 6:05 o'clock in St Francis Hospital where she had been a patient since April 13. Born in Litchfield, a daughter of the late Eugene and Roxana Corlew Lindly, she attended the local schools. She married Claud Boyd in 1918. [July 10, Montgomery Co, IL - divorced] On Feb 12, 1942, she married Charles Wesley Varner. He died Sep 21, 1970. Mrs Varner was a member of Union Avenue Christian Church, Philathea class there, Kniery-Knagg Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary, Gold Star Mothers and Senior Citizens Club of Litchfield. Surviving are three sons, Eugene A Boyd of Cedar Rapids IA, Leland C Boyd of Litchfield, Harry LaVern Boyd of San Antonio TX, and a stepdaughter, Mrs Edna Kettler [Mrs Frank] of Columbia MO, with 12 grandchildren [Marsha Boyd Uhlenhop, Lynn Boyd Reener, Harry LaVern Boyd Jr, Dora Boyd, Ruby Boyd, Harry Wesley Boyd, Thomas Boyd, Robert Boyd, stepgrandson, Linda Boyd, Charles Boyd, Karen Boyd, Gregory Boyd], three great grandchildren [Eric Uhlenhop, LeAnne Uhlenhop, Rhonda Reener], two step grandchildren [Barbara and Donna Kettler] and two step great grandchildren. She also leaves two brothers and two sisters, Harry Lindly of Virden, Otto Lindly in Arizona, Mrs Leone Beal [Floyd] and Mrs Erma Green [Frank] both of Hillsboro. Preceding her in death were a [step] son, Charles, who gave his life while serving with the air force in 1943 during World War two, her father on June 9, 1952 and her mother on Oct 2, 1952.
